Thanks everyone. Yes, I have fly-fished many types of water over the years, including really cold tough water in Patagonia. And I have white-water rafted and kayaked a good bit as well. I had one well advertised mishap where i stepped into a deeeep hole in Chile, but otherwise moving water never bothered me (being a former champion surfer). I had heard many of these ideas before. I do not like the idea of a rope unless it is a bank to bank rope that you can easily let go of. I did know to keep the feet up if going for a "swim." What I did not know and thank you all for is the "buddy system" of two or more hikers linking up. I think that might work very well - provided the hikers move in tandem and very, very slowly. I am still wondering though if there is some rule of thumb re when the combination of depth and fast water dictates not to even attempt a crossing.
