My Friend and I are going to do a Presidential traverse in two Parts, and wanted to stay overnight at one of the RMC cabins. We want to stay on a Thursday night in Late September. Do these cabins fill up fast, or can we get there in late afternoon and resonablly be able to have a spot? Also there are several choices of cabins, which one do you prefer, and why?
Thanks all help would be appreciated. :)

In the Fall they could fill up on a weekend, but most likely you will find space at either Crag Camp or Gray Knob. I prefer Crag Camp on nights that are not going to get too cold and Grey Knob for days that will be below freezing.

Crag Camp overlooks King Ravine in a majorly cool way! Crag also has bunks.

Gray Knob has no views unless you travel to the Quay not too far from the cabin. Knob has no bunks, just loft space.

Both cabins have their own kind of feeling, I like them both very much. Good luck on your trip!

Thursday or any other week day should not be a problem finding a spot even late in the day. I would opt for Crag if the weather is clear. As mentioned the view from Crag is awesome! also be aware that if you stay at Crag or Grey Knob H2O is a bit of a hike away...be prepared to haul your water back to either cabin.

Just another note - water from the spring (equidistant between Crag Camp and Grey Knob) is piped (at least to Crag) in the summertime. There's a spigot right off the back door of the cabin. The source is an open spring, not a well, so most people fill up a large container then filter that into their drinking bottles, though some will risk drinking it directly.

At some point in the fall, perhaps already, this pipe will be disconnected due to the cold nights, and you'll have a not-great-footing walk (1/8 mile? 1/4 mile?) to the spring itself.

In winter, don't muck around with the box over the spring, just take your water. In the past, people have tried to "improve" it and ended up allowing the spring to freeze over, which really ticks off the Grey Knob caretaker. :(

Thank You

Thanks for all the great advice. It really has been helpfull :)
