I have put my best local scouts on this question and full answer forthcoming

as of monday it was marked

road closed mud

on the Sandwich side

typically the worse spots are right at the beginning..first 1/2 mile..then there is a very bad place coming up to the height of land from 49

my guess is there is still lots of ice and snow as it is a heavily used snowmobile trail in winter..

I will get back to you on this

Sandwich Dome?

and the answer is

From route 49, 1 mile in.. Sandwich Notch road fine to just past the cluster of homes in that gorgeous upland meadow..saw a big deer there this evening

just past the last house..or at least the last house til the real last house which is quite a ways in
the road is marked

"Closed to highway vehicles"

At this point the road is clearly signed as a snowmobile and off road vehicle trail with several warnings about driving up in there

there was evidence of 4 wheeler use but no subaru traffic past a little..quite muddy..turn around

hope that helps..

looks like a great day tomorrow on the trails..enjoy..I hope to get out for something in late afternoon myself....

Algonquin Tr.

Not sure of your planned date, but if there is still snow and/or ice present, there is a small section of the Algonquin trail that I would certainly rather go up than down.

Here is a picture.

To the left of this ledge is a 20-30 foot drop to the ground below. Wouldn't be good to fall! There is a good chance it is melted out though because it is fairly open and faces SWish. Just an FYI. Have a great hike.

Sweet! I didn't think there were ledges like that in the Whites, see what happens when ya venture out under 4k?

Thanks for all the beta, Silverfox et al-- I think I'll stick to the standard route this time of year, given the road conditions.

I hope to plan a bike stash later when the road dries up, because I read that the Algonquin route is awesome, and I love a traverse that involves a bicycle. :)

Generally Sandwich Notch Road opens sometime in May, in the old days you might not want to drive it even if officially open but sounds like they are getting more nannyish.

As you are now an official bushwhacker, you might want to start up Algonquin Trail but stay on the woods road when the Algonquin turns L. This road goes to Black Mtn Pd but they have tried hard to obscure it near the pond so the reverse may be hard to find. Climb Sandwich from there and return via Algonquin. I consider Smarts Brk to be tedious and Black Mtn Pd from Guinea Pd to be muddy.

Interesting idea! That would certainly add some adventure to it. :)

As of this evening, the most humorous status is:

"Sandwich Notch Road has been closed by New Hampshire DOT due to the number of vehicles that have been stuck on it."

Sounds Like FUN !!!

I was debating going on the Sandwich Notch road on Saturday, just for a ride(motorcycle that is). I have a large on/off road motorcycle that just loves the mud. Tuesday maybe a nice day to take a stroll down and check out the stuck vehicles!

BTW I was one of those 10 million motorcycles on the Kanc Saturday (guess every other motorcycler on the planet had the same idea). I need to be more creative (should have gone to Sandwich Notch!).
