Summits: Passaconway, Whiteface, East Sleeper, West Sleeper, South Tripyramid, Middle Tripyramid, North Tripyramid

Trails: Oliverian Brook, Passaconaway Cut-off, Square Ledge, Walden, Dicey's Mill, Rollins, Kate Sleeper, bushwhack, Mt. Tripyramid, Pine Bend Brook

Beautiful day for this loop. Spotted my car at Pine Bend Brook, and took a pretty brisk bike ride down the Kanc to Oliverian Brook. I started up Oliverian Brook at 7:30, and quickly ran into the beaver dam and flooding that I had read about. It was tricky to get around, though I found the easiest going was along the rim of the dam itself, on the very left edge of the trail corridor. Passaconway Cut-off was nice, except for a couple short wet and muddy sections. Square Ledge and Walden Trails made me feel the steeps, but stopping to look back every so often rewarded me with more and more open views. All in all, I made decent time to Passaconaway, arriving at 10:20. After soaking in the 360 degree trees, I descended Dicey's Mill to Rollins. I apparently had selective memory from the last time I hiked Whiteface/Passaconaway, granted I went up Blueberry Ledges, across Rollins, and up and down Dicey's Mill. What I remember best, was the climb from Rollins to Passaconaway being brutal. This time around, I found the climb from Dicey's Mill to Whiteface was equally brutal. After hitting the wall several time, and considering bailing on the loop down Downes Brook, I plopped down on Whiteface at noon. After some rest, food, and beautiful 360 degree trees, I sallied forth down to Kate Sleeper. Having only been on the portion of this trail from the South Slide to East Sleeper, I very much enjoyed this new section. Several relocations made for interesting trail finding at a couple points. I arrived on East Sleeper with its astounding 360 degree tree views at 1. Continuing on, I took at short bushwhack to the high point on West Sleeper, returned to the trail and cruised over to the South Slide. Here I took a short food break in the sun, and arriving on South Tripyramid at 2:20 and again enjoying 360 degree trees. I then made my way uneventfully across the remaining Tripyramid peaks arriving at 2:45 and 3:15 respectively. The viewpoints on Middle Tripyramid didn't disappoint, and more than made up for the treed summits of the day. Descending Pine Bend Brook was interesting to say the least. Some gnarly steep sections up top, interspersed with some smooth level sections, then descending roughly to the brook sapped what remaining energy I had. I took one last break near the top of the drainage, dug deep, and made my exit. Once on the flats outside the wilderness boundary, I picked up the pace a bit, popping out on the Kanc and jumping in the car exactly at 5.

I even remembered to pick up my bike at Oliverian Brook.

Ran into you on the Sleepers, nice to meet you! Glad I climbed UP Pine Bend, the top section must have been fun on the way down... Nice reporting!

Nice to meet you too! Were you with the other dude and the dog, or were you solo? Yeah, that top section was mighty fun coming down, though either way I sliced it, there was bound to be a steep down at the end of the day. Will probably check out Sabbaday Brook when I go for the Tripyramids in winter.

Cheers,

Bill
