We managed to get all nine people by 7am to Lincoln Woods, however before we sorted Santa gear, introducing ourselves and saying good morning to the portapotties it was 7:30 before taking off.
NH_Mtn Hiker, Janine, 7Summits, mountaingirl, Will, Farmer, Annalisa, nif and me headed up Lincoln Woods Trail towards Osseo Trail. The red Santa hats quickly spread out along the trail in cold morning. 1.4 miles Annalisa and I put on the MicroSpikes and a thermos of glögg was passed around before heading up the 4 miles towards Flume. The sun came out and it started to warm up a little.....took some breaks here and there and we soon figured out that the $2.10 Santa hats from Shaws actually were warm in the 10 degreee temps. Janine carried an orange version which she claimed was needed for Santa during hunting season Annalisa had a blue Christmas like hat and Norwegian gloves so she passed the santa exam as well
Took some pictures going up the stairs and the views for the Bonds and surrounding ridges were stunning. Annalisa took the lead up Flume and the spirit of Christmas soon descended upon the summit! This weren’t red coats storming Bunker Hill, these were red hats storming Mt. Flume without suffering any casualties!
The red hats continued the stroll in “winter wonderland” and we took a break below timberline before nif took off with her yellow Wild Things pack. We met some happy hikers on Liberty who seemed happily surprised of red hat parade. The temps were a lot colder on the exposed summits compared to the wooded parts of the ridge. After Liberty we let Annalisa pack the trail again. Not that it was a whole lot of snow there, but a good way to initiate the newcomers to the vftt hiking community by letting them do the grunt work. When we got to the steep section before Little Haystack she went off the trail to add a pair of socks on to fill the shoes with. After some additional photo shooting at the “crux” before Little Haystack, we assembled in the wind sheltered area on the east side of the summit. The glögg thermos was emptied here also. A group of French-Canadians started to sing jingle bells while passing us on the way to Lincoln. NH_Mtn Hiker, Janine and Annalisa decided that Falling Waters Trail was irresistible at this time of the day. Six red hats remaining and we headed for Lincoln. Nif and Farmer took the lead and 7summits spent a lot of time taking photos. Will, me and mountaingirl were in between.
We came upon JasonPatrik and Dave slightly before Lincoln. He reported that skimom, Dave Metsky et al were ahead of us and probably were on the way down Lafayette by now.
A little after 3pm we came up on Lafayette, the wind was making it feel quite cold in the single digit temps so we didn’t stay long......we wanted to get down to the woods as soon as possible.....and how about if the mini-keg froze and exploded in my backpack....the sun was on the way down and we continued into woods before we took our next break. Out with the headlamps although we wouldn’t need them for another ½ hour. We made good progress down Skookumchuck Trail although constant tricky ice spots. Farmer and nif took off for the cars and Will, mountagirl, 7summits and I stuck together in the dark. After the trail turns north and you go kind of parallel with route 93, it seems like six light years before finally hitting the parking lot. The moon came out through the trees 20 minutes before finishing the “ridge red hat adventure”. Now we just wanted to see how the Falling Waters group fared.
The get-together afterwards was great by the cozy fireplace........mtnmama and mtnpa hosts the best parties! Rubbing is best without rubber
There were many cameras in action that day.....I expect to see a few postings with them.....
