Sawyer River Road Temporary Closure

Sawyer River Road Temporary Closure
The Sawyer River Road (Forest Road 34) will be temporarily closed beginning Monday,
September 26, 2005 for replacement of a bridge. The Sawyer River Road is located off
of US Route 302 in Harts Location, New Hampshire.
Sawyer Pond, Sawyer River, and Signal Ridge Trailheads are accessed from the Sawyer
River Road. Hikers and others wishing to access these trails will be able to park in the
parking lot along Route 302 and walk down the road. This temporary closure will require
an additional 2 mile walk to the Signal Ridge Trailhead and an additional 4 mile walk to
the Sawyer Pond and Sawyer River Trailheads.
The White Mountain National Forest expects that the Sawyer River Road will reopen on
Saturday, October 1, 2005 to public vehicle access. Finish work on the new bridge may
require that the road be closed the following week.

Bueller? Bueller?

Hi.

Anyone seen any progress on this? Do you think it will in fact be open for Columbus Day?

I suppose I could just ask the Feds, but you guys are much more fun.

I'd like to know the status of this road if anyone knows, since I'm planning a hike up the Signal Ridge Trail on October 9th (Columbus weekend) with a group.

I should know this, but does the USFS have a site somewhere where up-to-date information like this is posted? Would Mohamed's site have it or does he do it for just winter conditions.

Thanks
Pb

I believe Mohamed stopped posting his road status page because the Forest Service was publishing one this spring. Here is the link
but it does not appear to be up to date with the plans to close Sawyer River Rd.

Pb here's the link to the WMNF current conditions - they have not updated the info on Sawyer River Road.
WMNF Conditions
The front page on th USFS site has been updated today:

Hikers Alert! -- Access to trails from Sawyer River Road (FR 34) Closed thru October 7, 2005 -- this is an extension of the original date shown in the news release
The document linked to the alert is unchanged from the September 19th original.

Road re-opened...

I checked the WMNF web site and it hadn't been updated. It said it was closed till Oct 7th.

So, just to be sure, I called the Saco Ranger Station and they said the road is open as of this past Friday.

If the weather cooperates, EBE and I plan to do Carrigan on Saturday and complete our 48 - Champaign for all (while the supply lasts :) ) when we hit the top!
