Was the washout repaired ? Is there biking or skiing or snowmobiling occuring on Sawyer River Road now ? thanks.

No first hand knowledge, but have read mulitiple TR that say conditions are very good for both the road and the trail.

The road is well traveled by snowmobiles, hikers, and skiers. The surface is well packed and ground up by the machines, making for good walking and skiing.

The washout has been repaired, leaving a dip in the road. Not sure if this is the permanent fix, but it's completely passable.

Check out New England Trail Conditions, and do a search for Mt. Carrigain and/or Sawyer River Road -- there are all sorts of recent reports and some include information about the condition of Sawyer River Road.

In a nutshell, the road was repaired to the point where it could open for snowmobile use this winter.

If you're familiar with how the road used to be pre-Irene and you head out there this winter, you'll see that the main washout area from Irene, while repaired, is still several feet below its original grade.

just curious what does skiing have to do with the rules?

For the Whites, skiing is allowed, while snowmobile travel is not, correct? That includes travel to the 'summer' trailhead.

This is not the same as the ADKs where I have read that you can get a snowmobile ride to the summer trailhead, but no further.

Skiing

Skiing is a permissible way of getting to a trailhead that may be lengthened by a road-walk in winter. Biking, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling are not permissible under the rules.

KDT

Skiing is allowed within the AMC rules for winter 48 award/patch completion. 'Cheating' implies that one is going outside the rules.

That was the heart of my question, Im not a skier, but was under the impression skiing was acceptable, just wanted to make sure. As far as cheating goes, Im familier with that, after all, Im a professional poker player, ( not that I cheat).

Here is a pic of the washed out area from this past Sunday:

You can walk the road the whole way, or take the packed down path near the Kiosk and follow it up to the washed out area.

It was pretty cool seeing this guy biking up the road:

Can't make it out, but was the bike a :

The problem with the fatter tires is fork clearance so Surly has come up with a big clearances front and rear..

Jay

I've always wanted a pugsley, but I can't justify the $1k+ for a "novelty" bike that I'll only use a few times a year. I saw one at the mountaineer in Keene Valley last year and spent a few minutes drooling over it. If I could have found the owner, I certainly would have asked for a test ride.
