I planned on doing seymour this sunday. I understand it isvery steep. Is the trail dangerous during a rain storm? I could always go and do lower wolf jaw instead

It could be as part of the herd path resembles a slide and if wet it could be problematic. I don't recall if it is possible to contour around the "slide area" or not.

When I hiked Seymour last summer I never set foot on the slide, so I would think it would be doable in the rain. The path is a good bit muddier than average under normal conditions, though.

The stream/slide runs parallel to the trail. The trail is on the right side of it. Even in fair conditions I found the slide was to slippery/slimy to climb.

The trail is easy to follow and while steep its doable. The hike up after the turnoff is only about 1.2 miles. It's probably no harder than doing lower wolf jaw in the rain.

Yes, there is a path to the left of this area. And this section is above where the "real Seymour slide" ends. It is steep slabs with clusters of trees amongst them. I let my friend lead the descent off Seymour (his 1st ADK high peak) and he took us right down it. As I realized where we were, I looked for an escape route but his laughter and giggles of descending like Tarzan, swinging from root to root, soon replaced any fears I had. Rain would have made it more problematic though, but it was the highlight of the day.

My son and I did it in the rain last year along with Seward in the same trip. The only thing I would say is that with the thick brush on these herd paths we could not have gotten any wetter. After awhile you just crash through the wet brush and splash wherever your feet land. IIRC all of the steep sections had handholds somewhere. The herd paths tend to be very spread out on the steep parts with many choices. We saw some campers at Ward Brook that looked at us strangely as we stood outside in the pouring rain talking to them. I don't believe they did any peaks that day :) .

Plus, the herd path is five or six miles from the trailhead. And the proper trail is pretty muddy whether it's raining or not.

That said, we got rained on (lightly, thank goodness) about four times when we hiked it; a couple times on the lower part of our descent of the mountain, then near the lean-tos along the truck road. Lucky for us, they showers never lasted long.

It was still a miserable hike.

JimB surely got wet more on Seward's part of the trip. Seymour is pretty open through nice hardwoods at the bottom - rock/trees as Doc mentioned going up, and fairly well traveled on the broad (somewhat expandsive) summit.

Only problem is that the views are excellent and you'll want to go back on a nice day. I say find a crappy peak on a crappy day... been to Nye?? Maybe Tabletop??

A nice day on Seymour?
Here you go...
