Does anybody know if Camp Hermance, Shehadi or Rich still have shelters? The White Mt Guide I have says they may be removed in the future. Compared to my Guide this is the future {I know, I will be buying an updated before trip } This is my yearly backpacking trip, My hikeing partner set up the route and work has been so crazy I have not been able to research like I normaly would so I figured id just ask the experts

I was there 2 weeks ago and was impressed by how quickly the former sites are becoming indistinguishable from the woods around them. I believe there are still restrictions against camping in the immediate area of the former shelters, and also there are some other restrictions about camping in the area due to the various designations of the land, so check before you decide on a camping spot. I think most people hike the Whiteface-Passaconaway loop as a dayhike now, but not sure about camping further in to the Sandwich Wilderness (for example the Sleeper trail, etc).

Edit: Never mind, M beat me to it. Looks like camping is somewhat easier than I thought. LNT, in any case.

We found a level spot on the ledges enroute Whiteface and pitched our tent there. It was very breezy ... a welcome relief from the insects at the time ... and had terrific views out over the Lakes. Tenting on a ledge required special anchoring and with extra line we tied a couple corners to nearby trees and anchored other corners with rocks. Careful coming out of your tent in the dark, though ... the ledge isn't very wide and straight ahead is straight down

Thanks! I allways bring a tent even if we are planing on staying at a shelter. This is more like a walk in the Mts with a couple nites spent in the woods just to get away. So at least I know what tent to bring. Thanks again
