I have been thinking where the best spot would be to view the new Granite Wind windfarm in Coos County and have decided that the Signal Mtn firetower would be the place. Anyone visited this tower and have suggestions on how to get to it? The Topo map shows a trail from the North, although Google Earth shows some very heavy cutting in this area.

Many of the roads in this areas were closed for the construction of the windfarm so I may not get up there this year but just getting some planning done.

I was there years ago, the trail had been obliterated by logging but the tower could be reached by a skid trail. Somebody had removed the middle of the steps using a chainsaw but that left the end of the plank sitting on the support angle that you could walk up.

I drove there via the Signal Mt. Road off of 26 2 years ago but you are correct with the logging situation...I'll see if I can scare up some info cause I have not done that mt..heard the tower is in ok shape..

I think the tower site was considered at some point for the public safety repeater system that had been proposed for Coos County. Given all the nice tall windmills with power in the area, I expect the need for repeaters on the fire towers is no longer an issue.

Rotating blades can affect radio signals and the electronics in the generation system may generate electronic and radio noise. I don't have any specific info, but windmill towers may not be good locations for repeaters.

Fire tower locations are also likely to be better radio locations than are windmill locations.

PB,

Here are some pictures of the wind towers from a few different 3k's. They were peek-a-boo views. I believe these are the towers on Fish Brook Ridge. I counted 11 a couple of weeks ago. I would think you would get some views of the towers from Signal.
