Jen (Nif) and I had been wanting to hike The Six Husbands trail but other hikes kept getting in the way. I had to convince her, which wasn't very hard that it would work to hike it Saturday over to Madison, and still make it for the Flag flying and join Frodo and our group of friends.
We decided to stay in Jackson Fri night so we could get an early start. Worked fine until the morning was beautifull, and our location gave us sweet views of Mt Washington and the cows were mooing...we had breakfast and enjoyed our coffee and managed to be an hour behind our 7:30 start.
I know Jen enough that we would make that hour up in the first part hiking in the Great Gulf. Mach V speed as we passed any chances of meeting those Husbands the hike so lamely advertises....We were to only see 3 posibilities and as we flew by them, they just spun in their tracks.
She let me make the pace and was gracious not to push me on the uphills.
We only met a few people and they didn't think that Six Husbands went to Madison for some reason?? I guess they didn't read our map?
When we finally got to the boulders, we stopped for snacks and water. We were both excited seeing the rock piles up ahead. (straight up). The cave crawling and bouldering was fun, the rock was a little wet and slippery but nothing we couldn't handle..
We finally topped out and had amazing views and the weather was perfect. We decided to take Edmunds Col Cut-off worried that we didn't want to miss the Flag flying and meeting our friends. It was slow, but we still were making good time. We could see the flag on Adams and then rounding the corner on Gulfside trail we could see people (our people) on Madison and got glimpses of the flag. We didn't stop at the Madison Hut, wanting to have as much time as possible on the summit so up we continued.
It was an uplifting feeling when we peaked up over and saw our friends sitting under this huge American Flag waving strong on Madison.
We enjoyed some laughs and refreshments while taking pics and enjoying hearing about all the different routes taken to the peak that day. Nice to see Skimom's kids join in also!
Now for the decision on our down hiking route???? We hadn't done Howker Ridge, so off we went with Juniper & UFC joining us for the fun. Frodo had offered us a ride to our cars, which was very sweet of him! I think he was secretly laughing at us fools! The hike down seemed to go forever and on tired legs from our already full day of hiking there was a little more whining than usual from all. The slippery rock and a few wipeouts didn't help. We managed to keep smiling as we had plenty to laugh about as we all took turns tripping and falling.
As Frodo had promised he was there for rides to our cars. Thanks for the lifts!!
Then off to Mr Pizza for more laughs and blushes from Dr Wu which have to be a record or something!!
It was a great day of hiking and a Sweet day of Remembrance with a fun group!
