Once the Auto Road opens, there's a easy way to get to the summit snowfields without carrying your skis up 4000'. It's a bit of a spring tradition, skiing with Otto Rhodes. A bunch of folks from a few different websites agreed to meet up on Sunday, with unlimited views, bright sun, and roughly 600 vertical feet of lovely snow. Armed with two propane grills, a few coolers full of sausage and beer, some kick ass skiers, and as much sunscreen as we could carry we headed up the road at 8:30.
We parked at the Air Force parking area, just at the 6000' pole. The snowfields are a mere 50' away. Temps were a bit chilly in the wind, but once on the snow and in shelter it quickly became t-shirt weather.
Seeker's first run, like buttah!
The snow was great, corning up nicely, and running nearly all the way down to the Alpine Gardens trail. The morning crowd was taking their first runs and we did so too.
This shot sums up the day
I took four more runs, interrupted with a beer or two, linguica sausage, and an occasion donning of the Chicken Hat. It was a glorious day.
