We're hiking West Bond on Saturday and staying in Zealand Hut Friday night. This is my first time staying in a hut and I was wondering if a sleeping bag would be necessary. I'd rather not bring it if I don't need it.

the hut isnt heated at night (correct me if i'm wrong) but I strongly suggest you take sleeping bag to keep you warm. You might of heard that the hut provides 3 blankets per bunk, which is true. Enjoy your stay at Zealand your going to like it

I prefer a sleeping bag but in the summer have gotten by with just a sheet and the blankets. It can easily be cold enough this weekend that you would want a sleeping bag, and the bunkrooms aren't heated. I don't think the stove in the main room has been fired up yet, but it only heats up the main room by a few degrees.

Thanks for the feedback. It would just be one less thing to deal with and I could use a day pack. I thought about other alternatives that I could stuff in my day pack like an emergency bivy sack (not sure how warm they really are) or a fleece liner, etc.

Would they let me stash a couple bags at the hut for the day?

Definitely, I usually just put it on the bunk I'm going to sleep on. Enjoy the hut, the sound of Zealand river rushing by almost drowns out the snorers.......almost.

I've never stayed at one of the AMC huts but after talking to some that have and seeing Dalraida's post I am going to guess that the blankets may or may not be washed over the winter but not again during the hut season?

I have stayed at other huts/cabins and will definately agree with the earplugs, good ones.

I believe that is correct. They live up there the entire summer then get flown out in the fall.

Thanks again for the feedback. We opted to pick up some fleece liners. Small enough for our day packs, warm enough for the hut.

It actually wound up being so warm, I didn't even use the blankets. Not a bad thing.

A very good trip overall. Hope to post the trip report soon.
