Yo, Matt, just put on your asbestos hiking gear and keep on trekkin'....I'm with forestgnome on this one. You take me back to the exciting "day off from school" experience and early-season wonder at the white stuff. Keep those predictions coming.

Franconia at 1200' got 1-3" and it's winding down now; there will be more at higher elevations, though. Cannon may have a shot at a Thanksgiving opening this year.

But I saw a car with NY State plates in town; it had an impressive snow load of about 8-10". The owner had carefully not removed any more than he had to to see his way here (if, in fact, he had driven over from NYS.) You would have loved this car too, Matt.

Thanks :) Gray just posted that as of 8:50 this morning Randolf NH had 7 inches and snowed there hard all afternoon, and thats in the valley! I think places like Adams and Madison or Twins recieved 10-15 inches from this, so pretty impressive. The snow will continue in the mountains lightening up Saturday. Wouldnt be surprised if someone posts a trail report from one of those places saying there was 16 inches of more. Franconia was a bit too far west for this one. Franconia notch said 4 inches as of 11 pm. Twin Mountain has had more than 5 inches so far. I love snow, and I know a lot of other people do as well. -Mattl

I'm at the base of the Southeast portion of the Sandwich Range and there is no snow to report...socked in up above, so I can't see Chocorua at the moment.

As an update, it started snowing at the southeast base of the Sandwich Range about an hour or two ago, but nothing's sticking yet.

Well if it makes you feel better all of the White Mountains have heavy snow this morning and Coos County as well. I think there still be will those arounts, thats why you have to give a range of forecasts. Snowstorms are so hard to forecast because of how variable they are. I am merely letting hikers know the hazards they will face hiking and anyone who enjoys weather. Im sorry if you have a problem with weather being "variable" at least I admit if I am wrong and tell what is going to happen. Why dont you try and forecast weather and see how challening it is. My forecast is actually still pretty close as of this morning, and most of the time. I think the northern Whites will get the most snow, Pres, Twins area and northern Whites. 4-8, higher peaks 6-10. Still going to happen. -Mattl

ps: I just read though those past forecast I did, and I really couldn't find more then 1 where I mentioned that I was completely wrong or made a mistake.
My post had nothing to do with the accuracy of the temps or snow fall amounts of your previous threads. I just don't think a few inches or even a foot of snow constitutes a natural disaster of biblical proportions as you seem to be implying.

Truth be told I am actually rather worried...

From your posts you'd think they were asteroid showers instead of snow showers. Don't worry Matt, we'll get through this. ;)

Sounds familiar. We've been put to shame by those southern/eastern border towns more than a few times in the last few years. By the end of the season, that's fine by me, but now I want to see the white stuff, as does the snow "industry" up here. Anyway, the car from NYS I mentioned with all the snow--did it pick it up at home, do you think, or east of here?
Were there two storm fronts?

I didn't think I was making a huge deal, just "talking" about snow. I would think the car was either in NH or Vermont, I don't think he made it that far with the snow still intact on the car. The highest amount so far in VT was Jay with 8 inches. Could have come from either. -Mattl

update: Stowe and Bretton Woods have had 12 inches so far, Waterville Valley says 16 inches at the top!.

Light, steady snow -- and swirling winds -- in Waterville Valley

It switched over from rain to snow about 6:30am today, and has been light, steady snow ever since, with temps slowly dropping. At 1500 feet on the valley floor, it looks like about 3 inches or so on the grass. The roads were warmer, so it's more slushy there. We haven't gotten a view of the mountain all day...

Most of the weather outlets seem to be calling for 3-6 inches before things wind down this evening.

A lot of factors come into play for perfect upslope, but for upslope itself, it is just moisture being lifted by the terrain as it reaches it. As moisture rises, it cools and is squeezed out by mountains. It most commonly happens in winter because cold air hold much less moisture then warm air. So if there is even any moisture available at all and the right wind direction, you can essentially get some form of upslope. In perfect upslope conditions which happened in 2005. Grouseking and I hiked Pierce, during what is called one of the most impressive upslope storms in history. Everything came into play that March day, and dropped 30-40 inches of snow over some parts of the White Mountains. Places like the Hancocks only had about an inch of snow from it, Pierce which seemed to win from what I saw had about 40 inches from it. It went from Franconia Notch to the Presidentials. Twin Mountain had 20ish, Bretton Woods had 28 or so, and Crawford Notch recored 24 inches or so at the AMC Lodge. It also comes into play during storms and enhances precipitation. Is that OK? -Mattl

Thanks...GOT .......IT :) But I think it is This that you are really hoping for. :D

4+ inches at 2000 feet... rumors of big drifts...

Had to go up to the ski area to pick up something. There was 4-5 inches on the ground at 2000 feet, and a friend mentioned that the ski area crew had encountered big drifts up on the upper mountain (3500 feet and up) -- the wind was really howling.

1-2 inches above 1000' in Enfield. It was a winter wonderland with wet snow sticking to everything. My morning walk turned into a four-hour tromp through the woods. winter = happy

In West Bethel ME, we had snow from about 8:15 to mid-afternoon. Along with the snow, we had scouring NW winds ( the kind that make you worry about your roof) that just never let it rest. From my kitchen windows I can look up into the foot hills around me, and see WHITE. From my vantage point on the Route 2 construction site, not a flake stayed in place in the open.

DH drove home from Wildcat and the Jeep is crusted, he says 4"-6" at Wildcat base but crazy winds, so it was blowing/drifting as low as 2000'

I read in the MWOBS forums that there was 11.1 inches in the snow can at the noon observation. Also noted that the winds up top were gusting/flirting with 100+ mph. I'd expect extreme drifting above treeline, everything from butt-deep to scoured ice.

I guess we'll see what happened after its done.

4" at Pinkham Notch
0" in North Conway
Cranmore is bare - that's up to about 1,600'
The Moats are white, however.

Just remember if you want to keep your good Karma when you pass the Jay Store when you are leaving one must go to the end of the porch and get down on their knees and bow to the "Temple of POWDER" or one will forever be destined to scratch on the hardpack.

18 inches at Kinsman, 12 at Zealand and 12.5 in Pittsburg. Not too bad at all. -Mattl

Now up to 13.5 in Pittsburg ;)

And NWS officially recorded 7 inches in Jay, not to start anything, of course. :) :) :). I'm pretty sure thats measure at a different local.
