Anybody for some social networking this weekend?
Only if you help me with my list...

...otherwise, I'll just have to find someone who will. Hrumph!!

(Tweet!) Time out. Sorry, Dave, for stealing your line.

Let's recap:
Wrote original post.
Felt original post could be perceived negatively, as some lines sounded a little rough.
Went back and deleted it on my own (Rare, random act of maturity).
Posted quick apology to the 22 who had read it and might've been rubbed the wrong way by it.
Naively thought that was the end of it.

A small plea: Read forestgnome's post in this thread. Click on the link he provided. These are EXACTLY the kinds of funny embarrassing tales I was trying to encourage people to share. Read them and smile, laugh, cringe, and suffer repeat embarrassment if you wrote one of them. And then feel free to add your own to this thread. Green square and good karma to the first person who turns this thread into something good. And then I can change the title.

To catskillclimber: If your user name is composed of two words, then that's a cool name. If it's composed of three words, then that's tragic; when did that incident happen?

As far as the social aspect of this board, I gotta agree with FF that the social aspect is a wonderful supplement to the amazing knowledge and fun and friendly and helpful environment on this board. I know that some of my closest and most amazing friends have been a result of VFTT and for that I am forever grateful.

Smile, everyone . . . we are lucky to be healthy and happy and able to pursue our passion for the outdoors. :D sli74

I couldn't agree more. Along with providing valuable information, VFTT has been the cause of me meeting some great people. Isn't that what it's all about? Meet people with common interests and become friends? If some silliness shows up in a post, it's because we're comfortable enough with each other for a little bustin' chops.

ok, this didn't happen to me, but I saw it in person and found it quite funny.

A long time ago, before we were married, my girlfriend (later wife, now ex-wife) and I hiked up Ascutney via the Weathersfield trail. On the way back down, just below the Cascade Falls area the trail was very muddy. She was having a little trouble as she was getting tired. I asked if she needed any help getting across a very muddy spot.

Her reply: "I don't need any man's help, I'm an independent woman!!" She turned on her heel, took a half step and went face-first into the mud.

I could not help myself from laughing.

Stevehiker,
That is just the sort of thing I would do! :D
Not that Snowman would try to help me across a mud puddle...he knows better! :p
Great post! Made me laugh.

Let's face it. There was nothing at all inappropriate about the thread. I've stopped posting here (yes moderators, please kill my membership now) because people are just too damn sensitive around here and the first time anyone gets a little off topic or tries to have some fun people, moderators included, start crying about it. Stupid. This is the first time I've even checked out the site in weeks and one of the first things I see is someone defending themselves for something harmless. Get over yourselves and go take a walk in the woods, and if that doesn't make you happy then don't come back out.

Somebody has a case of the Mondays!

Love it! One of the reasons I visit this board is for the humor!

I, for one, wish the "balance" included more information, less Web 2 social networking type of fluff. After all, long ago and far away, this site started out as rec.backcountry.useful.

perhaps further forum "breaking up" may be a good idea. Perhaps one can be "useful information", ie cold hard facts the other can be more of opinions/personality driven stuff including humor, socializing, etc. Fluffier topics if you will.

of course it wouldn't be good to slice and dice too much. That other hiking forum has good stuff on it, but its way to hard to navigate around (at least with the ammount that actually gets posted) with what seems like dozens of categories, who knows.

From the beginning of this forum, we've steered away from the fluffier stuff by design. Certainly, some humor and socializing are welcome as long as it's related to hiking. Fluff for fluff's sake isn't encouraged. There are other forums that encourage that, but for now, this isn't one of them.

I guess I haven't been a member as long as you :)

What would be nice is if there was some way to delete the "good wishes" stuff after a month or so and better organize the long-lived information
