For Labor Day, I went somewhere I never thought I'd go...SC. Normally I hike up in the Whites, or any mountain that I am near, but this was different. I'm not going to go into too much detail since there wasn't much hiking involved. My only major hike was along a swamp trail at a place called Magnolia Plantations in Charleston. This is where I walked through some of the strangest trail I've ever seen and witnessed certain wildlife that I never thought I'd see. Here goes...

At Folly beach, south of Charleston

Seeing Palmetto trees for the first time was an experience for me

Now, the beach

Magnolia Plantations

Slave Quarters

Wow, look at this oak

Now, onto the hike thru the swamp

Never seen a trail like this before!

Wildlife

An Alligator!!

A really cute duck

Creepy! A golden silk spider

An Anole...cute little guy

Hope you liked the pics. Definitely a new experience for me, and I loved that area!

South Carolina

Phil,
A fine report and great pictures.
We were in South Carolina (Charleston, Pawley's Island area) in 2006 for a family reunion. It is a far cry from the White Mountains or mountains of Maine. We didn't think we would survive without a mountain to climb  but it turned out to be quite an enjoyable visit.

It really was great, and it exceeded all of my expectations. The swamp hike was an adventure in and of itself thanks to all the new fauna and flora. Seeing the giant oaks, tupelo trees, alligators, water fowl and even a water moccasin definitely added to the intrigue.
