Gail River Trail is bare bootable to the Garfiled Ridge Tr. There was some minor post-holing in a couple spots but you won't see that now. We and several other folks headed in to camp out, packed it out with snowshoes later that night....anywho...we made good time to the ridge arriving at 1:15pm, caught that group of 4 (5?) and two awesome dogs and shortly after headed to the hut. The going was slow, the snow was mixed from wind-blown consolidated to ice crust and the ever-present wad of snow (a la Cookie dough) beneath the trees over-hanging the trail in the otherwise firm powder. Each step was a challenge.
Breaking 6"- 1' with drifts of 2 - 3 feet.
We got to the hut around 2:30. We left the hut sometime after 3 and broke out a nice trail to the summit of South Twin. The snow was deep and yet also firmer, the wind packed snow was a lot easier to deal with. after another hour and a half we were at the summit.
Fine vftt!!
