I just noticed that the 'new' sign on Spaulding reads 3988'. This sign must date from after 9/2007, as I have a picture of an older sign at the summit. Spaulding was declared to be a 4K well before 2007. The M.A.T.C. apparently made the sign. Are they in denial? :D

While I can't read it, the old sign is much better--more character.

and I also have a pic but it's too hot to see the elevation..it was too hot that day to worry about getting a good pic..lesson learned always make sure the summit sign lettering comes out...

In 2002 it just said SPAULDING MNT MATC with no elevation.

The old USGS map clearly shows a 4000' closed contour.

I've heard there is a new renovated series, based on the older ones, that have a lot of missing contours and other errors. These new problematic versions may give rise to this instance.

Last July (2010) it was the recent sign with 3988', although the guide book (AMC Maine Mountain Guide, 9th edition) and accompanying maps say 4010', which is also listed on the NE67 application, and which also reads:

Hikers who registered for the New England Four Thousand Footer Club without having climbed Redington and/or Spaulding must have climbed these peaks in order to qualify for the New England Hundred Highest Club.

I'm enjoying the sign history, really! :D

But what I want to know is, why did the MATC put up a sign with 3988', so recently?
