It's the same plant. The photo I linked to is zoomed way in on the flowers, and is taken from a horizontal angle, so you can't see the leaf shape. The leaves are in two tiers (though not all individuals have the upper tier): the upper tier, where the flowers are, has three leaves [usually], looking a bit like trillium, and the lower tier has about seven leaves, looking a bit like starflower. In the fall the inner section of the upper leaves turns reddish, and then the berries turn dark purple.

Berries (still green):

Finally got around to those photos from 5/16 along Lincoln Woods/Franconia Falls/ Black Pond.

Saw this hobblebush in full bloom growing right up against a tree. Didn't manipulate the branches at all.

Saw many patches of these on S. Pack on Saturday, some with over 15 blooms, this was the only pic that was any good.

Help please, have always been able to insert pics inline, why is this making me click to view? I've tried all sized files and they all do this.

Thanks!

All of these are from my hike of Equinox Mtn on 5/23/15.

Great to see people still putting pictures up here. It's always great to see spring unfold.

I did a backpack across the whole Breadloaf Wilderness via the Long Trail Lincoln Gap to Middlebury Gap on Memorial Day weekend (5/23-5/24). There was about half an inch of new snow consistently on the trail and temps in the 30's the first day. Very interesting as there were extensive meadows of trout lily, purple trillium, and spring beauty.

Around Burnt Hill there were fields of spring beauty and trout lily a hundred yards wide, quite impressive

Any help in identifying these would be appreciated...

We were up north of Pittsburg yesterday and found these on a shrub on the trail out. We've seen them once before, in the winter, and they don't seem to open.

Assume they are seed pods of some sort, but not sure.

Looked online to see what they are but can't find anything like it. Also looked in the few books we have.

Thank you!

That appears to be a Pine Cone Willow Gall. This particular gall is caused by a Midge laying an egg on the stem of the willow. The willow then goes into overdrive forming leaves which never really mature but form these pine cone type galls. We recently saw some galls like this as we were hiking up to Deer Mountain in Pittsburg. They are pretty neat looking.

J&J,

Thank you!!!

Yes, we were at Deer Mtn above Pittsburg when we saw these on Fri when leaving the access road.

Thank you again!
