Howdy!

I was thinking about doing a hike from the Flume slide trail going all the way to Lafayette and riding my bike back to my car from old bridal path.

Has anyone ever had problems with theft or vandalism while having a bike hidden in the woods?

I've never left a bike in that specific location but I have used bikes before to either return to a starting point or set up a shuttle with no problems. I usually use a beater bike and lock it to a tree however.

Not that location, but I've left bikes for days while hiking in the Adirondacks. Sometimes, I would leave a note on the bicycle, "If you find this, it is not lost. I am just leaving it here while I am hiking. Don't take it. I need it to get home."

I bring it far enough into the woods, that it isn't visible, even by someone leaving the trail to go to the bathroom. I make note of where I leave it, so that I can find it later. This can be important.

I've stashed a bike many places in the catskills and around NJ without a problem. I don't even put it off into the woods that much but I'll use a simple combination cable lock on it and take off any little items that are fairly easily removable, i.e. the computer, any lights, etc.

I use my commuter bike when I'm bike stashing so it has a plethora of red blinkies in the back for those unexpected late night trailhead arrivals :)

I've done that too, way back in the woods beyond where any sane person would expect walk, not near the obvious end of the trail. I also covered it with branches and leaves. I lost a seat that way, chewed by critters, probably a porcupine after the salt. It was a very uncomfortable ride out. I'm glad they didn't get my tires.
