Maybe when some of you GPS experts finish deciding where the summit of Owls Head is, you'd like to take a look at Mt. Davis
The current USGS map
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=44.2042&lon=-71.3111
, the historic 15' USGS map http://docs.unh.edu/NH/crwf50ne.jpg
, and the AMC map show the Mt Davis side path climbing
steeply to a bump (the new USGS map incorrectly shows a lesser climb) then running N along a ridge maybe .2 miles to the summit. The AMC White Mtn Guide description says that it "climbs steeply .2 miles to the summit of Mt Davis" with no mention of a ridgewalk.
When I was there Sunday, there was a cairn on the first bare bump reached. I could see a couple more bare knobs to the N but found no obvious path beyond although there were some wandering ones that petered out. So did I miss something or does the trail really not go to the summit?
