HuiYeng and I were looking to hike something on Saturday. We were leaning towards the Wildcats until we heard that Jen was looking for something to do. The thought was to do something fairly short so we didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn and we could finish before dark. We decided on Tecumseh.
We met Jen at the trailhead at a reasonable hour. This would be a good opportunity to try new gear since it’s a short hike. I decided to try my new boots. So, we geared up and hit the trail. It was considerably colder than we had all expected. I neglected to put hand and toe warmers in because I thought it was going to be warmer. Jen took the lead and steadily made the ascent. The trail was well broken thanks to a group of people ahead of us and some snowboarders. We ran into a very perky 15 year old Siberian Husky on the way up. She was very well behaved and was talking to her owner to prod him along. She did pose for a photo op though.
We continued up the trail until we reached the split where you can go left or right to get to the summit. It was partly cloudy, a bit windy and quite cold at this point so we decided to add a few layers before hitting the summit. What happened to the upper teens that were predicted for today???? Jen continued leading the way to the summit. On a clear day, there is a good view of the Tripyramids. Unfortunately, it was cloudy so we only caught brief glimpses of them.
So, while Jen didn’t say anything about Tecumseh being her final all season NH48, I remembered that it was her final peak. HuiYeng brought Jen one of her WM 48 t-shirts and an AMC 4000 footer patch. We had a brief celebration of Jen’s finish before heading back down.
We were all hungry so we tried to move as quickly as possible. My hands were getting cold and I only briefly succeeded in warming them. Jen and HuiYeng were way ahead of me and by the time I reached them, my hands were completely numb. Jen leant me her super warm mittens and gave me some handwarmers. It took a while but they warmed up. On we went to the viewpoint that looks down the ski trails - it sure would have been much quicker to get down on skis. We were getting really hungry so we didn’t stay long…the car was the destination and the key to getting us to the Mad River Inn. It didn’t take long to get back to the car from the viewpoint and we were soon on our way for food and warm beverages. Another great day of hiking with friends and congratulations Jen on finishing the list that you weren’t working on
