Tecumseh via Mt Tecumseh trail 1/25/09

It was -8 when we pulled into the parking lot at Waterville Valley at 10 am..tecumseh seemed the right choice for this day..closest 4k to home..an old friend ready for you on cold or stormy days..

I used MSRs from the parking lot though others barebooted ..The first water crossing starting to freeze but still open..all other water crossing bridges solid..

The trail base solid and consolidated..the snowshoes helped with slippage and felt better on my feet than they usually do on my pack.. We made quick time to the ramp where helen stopped to but her shoes on...Sandy waited awhile and was comfortable barebooting.. About halfway up the ramp I heard voices behind me and Cath and Larissa jogged into view...we chatted a moment and agreed Tecumseh a good call on this cold day..they headed out and I continued my slog..

Once to the ridge it got windy and the snow became deeper ..out came the shell and Sandy stopped to put her shoes on...Trees above 3500 feet draped in snow..beautiful day with snow and bright blue sky in sharp contrast.. a little windblown on final ascent to the cone made for easy going..sometimes the loose snow really piles in there but not today... At the summit it looke dlike Cath and larissa had continued over to West as fresh track led that way..we ducked down to the little view ledge for a bit which was sheltered from the breeze and enjoyed the sight s for awhile and a snack...Mountains near and far in sharp definiton to the sky..to the north the Presis looked to be socked in...

The chill caught up with us and we boogied down below the ridge line where soon Cath and Larissa caught up with us again..this time we stopped and chatted for several minutes..good times ..good stories....great day in the mountains..after goodbyes they flew out of site and we continued our uneventful descent passing several groups of hikers and one group of skiers still making the climb..We all had snowshoes on for the descent and the bit of traction made for very easy going...much of the trail really packed out smooth by boarders and skiers

Just another great day in the mountains..coffee was sure good for the short drive back to Ashland...you get pretty sleepy after being outside for several hours then hitting the heated seats:)

Wow, beautiful blue skies, lovely snow-covered trees -- looks like you had a nice day on that great old, much-maligned mountain, Tecumseh. :)

LOVELY bumping into you on this fine winter day (especially since I hadn't seen you at all since the Ossipees hike). It made what was already a fantastic hike about 100 times better. :)

Your smiles brighter than the sun from 100 yards away..:D

always a pleasure to run into familiar faces and to share a few moments of the day...
