I live near a The North Face outlet and they have these on sale for 69.99 with 30% off so that comes to about $49.

Anyone have any experience with the HyVent DT coating in terms of breathability and waterproofness? It does have pit zips and weighs an average (advertised) 12.5 oz.

I use a MH Epic, but was wondering about people's expereince with this proprietary coating or jacket itself.

Thanks.

good coat.

I have this jacket. it is very waterproof and fairly breatheable! The pockets double as the vents (not great) and are in an awkward place on the jacket (for putting your hands in): middle of my ribcage. While this allows you to use the pockets when you have a pack with a waistbelt on, it still seems a little awkward. Sizing: get to a store and try this one on before you buy mail order. I usually wear a medium. I ended up with an XL just to get the thing long enough to cover my waist! (admittedly, I prefer a bit more overlap to my layers than most) So, the bottoms of the sleeves bunch up a bit at my wrists......this has actuallt turned into a selling point for me. I can pull the sleeves down over my hands to keep them warm when at idle. In the summer it gets a bit clammy inside.....so a light longsleeved layer is almost a must.

My nitpicks aside it is a geat jacket....and at that price I say go for it!

EDIT: just noticed it is a different jacket. The construction should still be similar to mine....pit vents might help with the clammy feeling in summer!

I have a Venture Strider Jacket (a little different), which is pretty much the same, just a little heavier, with a mesh lining. It is pretty good in the rain and the Hyvent DT has good breathability.
You can't beat the price. Go for it!!

Yeah, the pockets are put there on purpose so they can be used with a pack on, this is a (one) sign that this was made as a technical piece not the 'I just want to look cool' stuff The North Face is making a lot of nowadays. Some of their softshell type jackets have the pockets down low, which I feel make them useless except for around town.

I have the north face triclimate jacket. The hyvent is great for waterproofness but the breatheability could stand to be a little better. I agree with the odd positions on of the "pit vents" thats are more on teh rib cage than the pits. Over all im very happy with the jacket.

keepin' on was speaking of the lack of pit vents and using the chest height handwarmer pockets as vents.

The pit zips on the Venture jacket are in the normal pit zip location, not forward on the chest. The pockets are high (appropriately) and have mesh interiors.

not a fan of hyvent

i got some hyvent pants a long time ago when it first came out... they are supposedly breathable. in reality, they don't breathe at all. i might as well be wearing rubber pants. at least they have full side zips. if you're into the deal, go for it, but just thought i'd give you a heads up with a dissenting opinion.

I was in the North Face store in Freeport yesterday, and they had quite a few coats on sale for 75% off the lowest price. Might be worth a look if anyone is in the area and looking for a new coat.

I was there yesterday too, around 3 in the afternoon. Most of the stuff on sale was women's. The sales on men's stuff (mostly on the second floor) didn't seem to be as good.
