Another lesson I learned was not to heat my water in the microwave. Somehow a rolling boil there is not as hot as a rolling boil on the stove top.

I agree! Doug! Why is this so???

I have a couple of vacuum bottles that I almost never use. Mostly because they are lousy. The only difference from my 'great' thermoses is that there is more plastic in the assembly, most importantly where the spout is. The good thermosses I have are all stainless steel with the exception of the pouring plug.

Well, apparently microwaved water is actually more likely to be superheated if you use a mug or Pyrex as the smooth surface leaves little or no nucleation sites for steam to form and so the water goes beyond the boiling point. This means it will not have as rolling a boil.

But I still feel like when I make tea, it stays hotter when I use a kettle vs when I use a microwave to heat the water. I have no explanation for that.

I don't know if this meets your requirements as the "All Time Best" but it's worked pretty well for me. Only had one prior and it was glass and of coarse, I broke it.
Using the boiling water trick for 15 minutes has kept the beverage quite warm, not sure I can use the word HOT, for quite a long time. It doesn't show it the photo but mine also came with a nylon bag which adds to the insulation.

Joe - to clarify - is the Chinook vacuum flask in your links the one that broke because it was glass? Or is the Chinook the replacement after your glass model broke? Thx.

I have a cheapo Eddie Bauer vacuum thermos that works well, but wow is it heavy! I've been looking to upgrade with a lighter one (can't tell how heavy it is because I don't have an appropriate scale and many other option on the web don't seem to post weights either). I do like the non-slip rubber coating, the button pour option, and the cap cup-- all helpful features, along with its capacity to keep beverages hot.

I just received my new stainless steel Nissan thermos from Campmor. I filled it with hot water and put it in the freezer for 8 hours. When I took it out the water was still too hot to put my finger in. Problem solved! Thanks everyone for your input.

I have a Thermos - cafe Thermos. It is stainless steel and single walled, not sure if a vacuum to it but if I add boiling water to it and wait 15-20 minutes, dump it out and add my own hot liquid it will stay hot for a good 8 hours plus on a 10 degree day! I love it. Thanks NRA for handing me a freebie:D
