The OTHH group enjoyed the company of some Maine members as we set out on a lovely day to do T,F &W. Clear skies, cool temps and low humidity made this a great day to be out in the mountains. As we gathered at the Depot parking lot an elegant red fox stopped on the far side of the tracks and looked us over before trotting off down the trail. We set off at a good pace and soon reached the A-Z junction where we branched off for Tom. I think we were all surprised at the amount of water and mud on the trail as we ascended up to the Willey Trail junction.

Reaching Mt. Tom we were delighted with great views, over the trees at the peak and clear on the other side trail. We were greeted by two grey jays who enjoyed offerings of fruit and nuts. Down from there and off to Field where the view from the little trail was just magnificent. Leaving one of our group there to enjoy, what we thought might be a solitary lunch (but discovered on return that he was very entertained by 2 men who joined him for their lunch and spent 45 mins chatting with him) the rest of us set off for Willey, taking care going down into the coll as it was wet and the roots were very slippery. (I hate wet roots!). Lunch on Willey was leisurely and then 5 of the group voted to go down by the ladders and out to Ripley Falls. Much exchanging of car keys and we went our seperate ways.

Picked up our "Field man" we headed down Avalon. It was wet and it seems like some of the rock steps may have moved in all the rain this summer. Took our time but also took time out to go up Mt. Avalon before returning to the parking lot.
Silverfox and Claude did their fair share of trail maintenance today, moving big trees from across the trails as well as many sticks and debris that were around. Smooth sailing for the next group! Met quite a few hikers out there today enjoying the lovely weather. Always good to see so many in the woods. A good dayout with 12 OTHH including our own Cymbidium, Sleeveless, Silverfox and the always...

I missed the fox! I must have been gabbing. Nice report Gram. It was a fun summer hike complete with great views, weather and hiking buddys.

Nice report Mary..

Tom has such excellent views now..maybe a little tippy toe at the summit but the other bench looking out at Washington excellent

Certainly a fine day on the trails..one forgets how rough and dilapidated the Avalon Trail from A-Z to Field is... heavily used and abused..not much fun..

great swim in Jefferson Brook afterwards...excellent

I was up on Tom and Field on Tuesday and met a group from OTHH on Mt. Willard, which was my warm up. I was pleasantly surprised by how few people there were up at the 4,000 foot level. Most of the hikers seemed to stay low down on Willard.

I'll catch you next time, Mark.

They sound yummy but missing one key ingredient for the Silver Fox....caffeine! Maybe we could inject each little berry.. oh that's just silly.;)
There is already some caffeine in chocolate: 5-10 mg/oz for unsweetened or semi-sweet and ~5 mg/oz for milk chocolate.

A cup of coffee typically contains 100-150 mg/cup so 1-2 lbs of chocolate should do the job. Hope he likes chocolate... :)
