Trail-less Dix, Hough, Grace 10-05
This route is a bush whacking ascent of Dix via the Beckhorn slide and uses the ridge herd path to E Dix (Grace) and then slide and herd path for the return toward Rt73 (this hike is essentially DW08 in
http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~reiterc/wfw/index.html
and is only suitable for very experienced Adirondack off trail hikers)
Ground was damp but the trees were dry. Lovely carpet of fall leaves on the ground at deciduous levels hid an occasional puddle. There was light remains of snow at higher elevations making the slide wet -- not a good day for this route. The herd paths from Dix to Grace were largely clear of blowdown with only a few muddy spots. The classic slide route on Grace was fine and easy going. It was a bit of effort to stay with the herd path below the slide due to the leaf ground cover.
