I plan to complete a section hike of the LT in early August. Does anyone have any recent info regarding transportation from the northern terminus? I have an older copy of the End to Ender's Guide, but I am not sure if the service providers listed are still in business. I believe there is no longer a bus service running from nearby Newport. Any suggestions? I would be trying to get from North Troy to the Concord NH area. Thanks!

You are right WG, the North Kingdom bus service stopped about four years back.

Rose Apple Acres Farm B&B has done shuttling the last few years and I assume they are doing it this year. Their website is http://www.roseappleacres.com/ Other B&B's will do shuttling for guests.

You might ask about shuttles at www.trailforums.com - people know of informal shuttlers and are kind hearted posters sometimes offer to give you a ride. I think there is at least on useful thread on the Long Trail forum from last year with ride info.

By train, St. Albans is the closest stop to the Northern Terminus - but its not convenient to Concord NH. Montpelier is the best bus stop, you can change at White River Junction for a bus to Concord. When I hiked the LT last year, I had Rose Apple Acres and one other contact as plan B - with hopes that I would meet up with a fellow northbound traveler who could take me at least part way to the nearest stop. I was lucky to run into very kind soul from my first LT hike who drove me to the Montpelier bus station.

Rose Apple Acres arranged a shuttle for me last July to get to Smuggler's Notch. They didn't do the shuttling themselves but they did pick me up when I'd gotten to the downhill end of Journey's End Road. They also gave me a place to park my car for six days.

The driver of the shuttle, Bob B., is a retired jet engine mechanic who does quite a bit of shuttling during the winter to and from Burlington for patrons of Jay Peak. He gave me his phone number. If RAA isn't still shuttling, p.m. me and I can give you this guy's number he might also be worth a try.
