The disciplined group (SueBiscuit, MEB, Little Sister, Giggy, Deb, Darlene, Youngblood and myself) headed out around 11am to place cars after a strenious morning workout in the kitchen.

Little Sister (who is very mean) set up a ferocious pace and after about a 1/4 mile Youngblood had to turn back. Sun was shining beautifully and after hitting the ledges facing south Little Sister found an awesome place to take a break. We could see Chocorua in the horizon and we gobbled in about 3,000 calories of stuff each before the crew started up the headwall towards the ridge. It was Deb's first outing this winter and she was strong and steady and might qualify as a mean sister one of these days ;)

After hitting the ridge I was trying to navigate but that didn't work to well in the thick jungle-like vegetation at close to 2,000 feet above sea level. MEB took over and she got a good bearing towards the lower of the two peaks....the final steep section looked fairly free of giant cornices and avalanche danger so we decided to go for it. Great views welcomed us (except for building, the tower, the pile of propane tanks running the cell phone tower).

Our next goal was the main peak and we brought our sleds to go down to the col which looked real far away. Enjoyment it was.....then we headed up toward the summit cut-off which had a sign that we had gone 2.7 miles in the last 3+ hours. We pounded our chests and spent another 15 minutes or so to cover the 0.2 miles to the tall summit.....another 2,000-footer knocked of the list.......it was cold and windy here and we prepped the sleds for takeoff.....oh boy.....1.5 miles and 7 minutes later we gathered by the bridge......in that timeframe we also helped to turn a snow mobile around who couldn't make it up the steep trail......

MEB was now so exhausted that Little Sister and I pulled her on the sled for 1/2 mile or so before the terrain was condusive for sledding again. And voila - we were at the yellow farm by the road! The evening was spent at a cross stitching class at an undisclosed location.....the next day the word had gotten around that the sledding was wicked wicked so on Sunday we had twice as many people sledding.......but that's a story for another night.....good night ;)

Sounds like your approach was pretty grueling...glad we took the more direct route on Sunday. Of course, that just gave us a complete preview of what was to come (not a good idea if you're nervous). I was pretty convinced that I would be the big casualty of the day, since I think I was the only one who had never sledded on such terrain ('cept on my butt). The sisters were very helpful, though, pointing out the deadly ice bulges and whatnot that I would do well to avoid .

Long story short, we all survived and it was, as Mats would say, :D:D:DWICKED AWESOME:D:D:D.

Both times I've done that trail in the winter I've sledded down until the bridge - AWESOME! - and I'm sure it's even better now that you don't need to worry about busting a tail-bone on exposed rocks.

That was, by far, the most fun I've ever had sledding (part of the Sunday crew). Everyone laughed and screamed the entire way down. Seeing Dr. Wu coming down the trail looking like the abominable snowman was priceless. Here are my pics from Sunday:

Can't wait to go on this sledding adventure again!!!

Killer weekend - some fun!!! Great to hike with deb again - she doesn't hit trail much anymore

Good to hear Deb is getting after it. Perhaps she'll be giving Gig a run for his money soon.

A good cornice drop can be fun every once in a while as long as the avi danger isn't a threat. Go for it!!!

Thanks Mats for helping us all achieve our dream of summiting mighty Mt. Pleasant. I think we are all now sufficiently prepared to climb up and sled down Everest.

BTW, extreme sledding is cheaper than a face lift. My cheeks are still stuck on AHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

extreme sledding is the best!!

Such a fun weekend and my new favorite sport! Extreme sledding! My stomach is still hurting from laughing so hard!:D

Both days were equally fun! The hike up the first day was tough, through deep un-broken snow....but we made it and had such incredible fun coming down and managed to avoid hikers and snowmobiles without incident!:D

We even helped one stuck snowmobile turn around...he might of made it a little farther except he had to wait for us to gather and lost his momentum.....nice guy though!:)

Thanks everyone for making the weekend laughs stay out of controll...and Wu, I can't look at your picture without hearing the sounds you were making...I wish I had my camera on record!!!!

I have been extreme sledding on Pleasant Mountain for the past 10 years or so....this was by far one of the best times I've ever had though! I think I strained my vocal chords from yoo-hooing too much and my stomach and face are still sore from laughing so much. Suprisingly though I managed to get down without peeing my pants. If I had not ben suffering from sleep deprivation I would have been able to walk out the lst 1/2 miles or so....thanks Rachel and Mats for letting me rest and be lazy....although you did say you were looking to get a good work out.

Hey guys, thanks for breaking out the South West Ridge Trail. That's usually the last to be broken out in the winter. It also has the best views of any of the trails on Pleasant Mt.

By the way, if instead of going down the Fire Warden's trail, you continue on over the ridge via the Bald Peak trail, you'll get some of the best views any 2000 footer can offer. Then---the ultimate in extreme sledding:eek:-- you go down Shawnee peak. You may have to wait until the ski season ends but it's a great ride.:D

I agree - all joking aside, this was a great hike. I thought it was comparable to Monadnock as far as "bang for the buck" for a peak. Nice open views, etc..

It was a very enjoyable hike.

great pics, darren. too bad i took you by surprise and you weren't able to take a picture.. especially since i crashed right in front of you. heh. :)
