I am considering bagging North and Middle Tripyramids tomorrow (1/30/14) or possibly Monday. When I first did them I came up from Livermore Rd and enjoyed the infamous North Slide. But, for the winter I want to avoid the slide and either come up via Scaur Ridge trail or come in from the Kanc on Pine Brook trail. On Livermore I can probably use my pulk (a.k.a. - grandson’s sled) to pull my pack a good ways (as I did on Garfield Monday) but the shorter trail from the Kanc is tempting. I haven’t seen any recent trail conditions on the Trips. Any suggestions, recommendations, knowledge or prediction of trail conditions would be appreciated. Thanks

Pine Bend out and back is the normal route. If ice bridges are in place and reliable Sathathday Falls trail out and back is a nice walk with good shelter from the wind

I always do the Scaur Ridge Trail since I live on Rt. 49. I’ve been meaning to test my mettle pulling a pulk on XC ski so I might do that. It is after all down hill.

Me and my dog are either doing pine bend on Thursday or Cannon. I'm leaning towards the Tri's we could use a " Double". Ill be online for awhile if you want to join us let me know.

Normal for you :) I've only done them in winter from Waterville Valley via Livermore Road... No water crossings to speak of this way. Nice view of the north slide while hiking in...

sierra;
I always go solo because i hike so slow (emphysema - average 1 mph ) planning on the pine bend route. hope to start at ~ 6am. will look for you and your dog to pass me going up and down. look for red RI truck at trail head.- Marvin

Pine Bend. Dont push to middle if its late. dont get sweat soaked, start cold to cool, and put layers on when you stop. Bring a minus 20 sleep bag or a space blanket and insulated pants along with your normal arsenal......TRIPPY is a long day hike in winter. Id use microspikes to walk natural and not sway around to conserve energy and focus; if its packed enough down lower. up higher you'll need the snowshoes and I'd sloppy down with them when your tired.but when you get back to the flats, if its packed enough Id shed them again. based on my 4 days nearby at passconaway last week- the crust and powder commbo is tiring to break through witht he snowshoes break in and then pull up out of it......have fun

You might try S Slide which I've been up 3 times in winter, it's nothing like as tough as N Slide

Or bushwhack to the N-M col from brook crossing on S Slide Trail, a Guy Waterman route

I've also used Sabbaday and Pine Bend routes, latter easier than former

Did winter up Sabbaday & out Pine Bend several years ago in a warmer winter and the crossings where a bit nerve racking. The year we did it, we did not have much snow either or ice and the snow on the upper parts of Sabbaday Falls kept slipping out beneath our feet.

Many years ago in Mid-December, Chomp and I went up the South Slide and down to Livermore by the Scaur Ridge trail. I preferred that loop over the other. I like the Livermore approach over the Pine Bend approach but then, I've been called unusual once or twice before....:rolleyes:

I ended up going from Pine Bend. Glad I did because there were two other solos (ben & greg) that helped break trail for me once they passed me. One in spikes other in snowshoes like me. There was 1 faint set of boot and dog tracks - I assume left by LongMark & Cinilla Monday (see above link fro Iquest). No sign of any recent traffic coming up from Livermore or Sabbaday. Late start for me (0730) finished 10 hrs later. Despite forecasts of blusterry wind with low wind chill there was zero wind. I could have done a peak above treelines. But it was a great hike despite a bit hard through deep snow before getting passed. Trail is well broken out now. Sorry you didn't make it Sierra.
