Hi,

I have been looking to buy the Maine hiking maps made with tyvek paper but I can't seem to find anyone who sells them. I have the Maine Mountain Guide but the maps that came with it are paper and they are not holding up very well. I also have the AT Guide to Maine which came with very nice maps but the maps only cover the AT in Maine. Anyone know where I might be able to buy these??

thanks

Since the MMG and its maps are made by the Appalachian Mountain Club, I have to ask have you tried there?

Bean's in your neck of the woods has, or had the Tyvek AMC maps.

AMC makes the same ones that come with the MMG, but in Tyvek.

In my opinion, it's a waste of everyone's time and money to even bother inlcuding the paper ones with the various guides. they should charge a couple of bucks more and sell a product with some longevity. and yes, I've mentioned it to the AMC.

For Baxter, the best map is Clark's map out of his book, although it isn't Tyvek. The 2nd best map is Delorme's guide to the park which is waterproof (although not Tyvek), but is missing a few trails and things that Clark includes (not just thbe abandoned trails that Clark loves to show even though they haven't been used in decades).

The new MMG includes a map for the Gulf Hagas area, although I haven't seen it yet.

Spencer, what is the name of Clark's book, and where can you get it?

DMS,

it's called Guide to Baxter State Park and Katahdin (by Stephen Clark).

Up here, you can buy it in most any outdoors-related store, and at HQ. A quick search shows that Amazon sells it.

There are a few disappointing things about it, but it really is far superior to the MMG section on BSP.

I have the 4th edition and I'm told the 5th edition (2003) is somewhat better, but mine is choc full of editorial blunders.

The map, however is very good.

I have this map. It is an excellent purchase. We planned our trip up to Baxter with it. 2 Weeks to go!

Thank you!

Tramper Al and Spencer- thank you so much for the links to where I can get the maps I've been looking for. :) I'm up at Beans on a regular basis but it appears as though they only carry the NH tyvek trail maps. I thought I had checked AMC but I must have missed it somehow.

thanks again,

It's not as good as the tyvek but I have found that spraying a paper map with Krylon clear spray paint makes it hold up to water and abuse quite well. You can buy it where most spray paint is sold and it dries quick. I works nice for computer printout maps also.

Spencer, thanks! Just ordered one! Another map to enjoy! Life is good!

MMG and Gulf Hagas

Just a quick follow-up for MEB and anyone else who's curious.

I was at Joy Street yesterday, and briefly checked out the new MMG and its maps. There is indeed a Gulf Hagas map that has been added. It's quite small, but in addition to the trails within the Gulf itself, the trails connecting to (as well as in and around) Little Lyford Pond Camps are well shown, as you might expect. These connections are not shown on the MATC 2004 map, for instance.

Also, the Tyvek version that they had on sale yesterday does not YET have the Gulf Hagas addition, so I think they are probably still selling those consistent with the previous MMG edition.

Hope that helps a bit . . .
