There was an earlier VFTT post about this, which I can't find, but some further details are available. .

USFS posted this alert concerning bridge work near the fish hatchery at York Pond. When the work begins in mid-August it will add a two mile road walk to the following three trailheads: Unknown Pond (southern end); Bunnell Notch (west end); York Pond (north end).

It will also make access to Cabot even more difficult. You aren't able to get there from the west; from the east, add 4 miles now. Or come in from the north on the Unknown Pond Trail (not the best of trails) or a backpack up the Kilkenny Ridge Trail from the south/west. The work is scheduled to end in December. The "good" news is that the work on the York Pond Road is canceled. Here's more on this from today's Littleton Courier:

"York Pond bridge work affects hiking trails

07/20/2005 - BERLIN—A bridge project beginning late this summer at the York Pond Fish Hatchery, on York Pond Road, will affect hiker access to several trailheads in the Kilkenny region of the White Mountain National Forest.
The work, which is scheduled to begin in mid-August and run through December, involves replacing the Cold Brook bridge on York Pond Road.
"During the bridge replacement, public vehicles will not have access beyond the hatchery parking area at Cold Brook," said Patricia Nasta, spokesperson for the Androscoggin Ranger District. "Hikers will have to park outside the gate and hike in to the trailheads."
The York Pond Fish Hatchery campus is the hub for hiking in the Kilkenny region, which includes trails throughout the Pilot and Pliny mountain ranges. The Kilkenny Ridge Trail transverses the heart of the Great North Woods area, running from Jefferson to Stark. Trails leaving the York Pond Hatchery provide access to the center of the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, as well as to Mount Cabot, the state's northernmost 4,000 footer.
According to Nasta, hikers wishing to access the east end of the York Pond Trail, Bunnell Notch Trail, or the south end of the Unknown Pond Trail will be required to walk approximately two miles along the York Pond Road to these trailheads.
"Hikers wishing to access Unknown Pond may choose the north end of this trail as an alternative," said Nasta. "The trailhead is located near the end of the Mill Brook Road off Route 110 in Stark."
However, access to Mt. Cabot and Mt. Cabot Cabin will require additional effort, as access to the Mt. Cabot trail from the west remains closed, she added.
Roadwork that had been planned for York Pond Road has been cancelled.
In a press release issued Monday, Forest Service officials expressed their regret over the inconvenience to hikers.
The press release noted that the road condition is in serious need of upgrading and repair to meet travel needs and safety concerns. Patchwork efforts in recent years have not been adequate to address these issues, Nasta said."
