I'm looking to visit either or both of Camel's Hump and Mansfield on Friday. Have never really hiked much in VT before and my trail guides are a bit elderly. Anyone have suggestions for routes? I know the LT goes over both...what would be the mileage and elevation to each summit from the nearest road approach via the LT? Other ideas?
Thanks,

Just did both of these a few weeks ago. No bugs, water available lots of places.

Happy Birthday to another 7/27er!

Mansfield round trip via:

Sunset Ridge Trail – 6.6 miles, 2600’
Sunset Ridge, Long Trail south, Maple Ridge Trail, CCC Road – 8.9 miles
Hell Brook Trail from the east – 3.6 miles, 2660’
Long Trail from the east – 4.6 miles, 2800’

Camel’s Hump round trip via:

Long Trail from the north – 12.4 miles, 3600’
Monroe Trail from the east – 7.4 miles, 2645’
Forest City trail from the west, Long Trail north, return Burrows Trail – 5.6 miles, 1950’

I highly recommend the Sunset Ridge/Maple Ridge loop. It’s mostly above tree line. The Camel’s Hump loop is pretty good, too. Unfortunately, both are on the 'wrong side' of the mountains coming from your direction but worth the extra drive time.

Good sources are the Long Trail Guide and two maps by Map Adventures: Vermont and New Hampshire Hiking and Northern Vermont Hiking. They cover Mansfield, Camel’s Hump, Lake Willoughby, the Worcester Range, Elmore, Killington, Abraham and Ellen, Ascutney and the AT from Hanover thru Moosilauke. Included are hike descriptions with mileage and elevation. You can find them at the Mountain Wanderer.

I don't have my maps and books with me here at work, so I can't give you accurate elevation/mileages. FWIW, I really liked the Forest City/LT/Burrows loop. I'm going to guess that was ~7 miles, moderate hike.(someone please jump in with accurate details here if you've got em handy). I have done other trails on Camel's Hump and they are great too, I just don't remember the names right now. I've only hiked one route on Mansfield which I wrote a trip report about:
Mansfield Hell Brook Trail

That was easily one of my best day's hiking ever. I still get smiley thinking about it now.

Happy Birthday, have fun on Friday.

Camel's Hump

Happy Birthday -

Just did Camel's Hump about 10 days ago...have not got a trip report up yet.
I highly recommend taking the Monroe Trail to the Dean Trail and then appraoch Camel's Hump from the south on the Long Trail. It is very alpine and the views are great. We descended back down the LT to the Alpine Trail and back. The Alpine Trail gives the added bonus of seeing the wing of a B-24 that crashed there in 1944.

This hike is one of my top five all time hikes...beautiful!!

Have fun!

We have directions to the Sunset Ridge trailhead on Mansfield and a trip report on our Web Page.

We really enjoyed the hike and the picnic in the park (at trailhead) afterwards - they also have restrooms with running water for after the hike!
