Congratulations to you Mats, and to everyone in the hiking party for what was quite an accomplishment, for sure!

Nice job mats and jeff and really everyone.

when I didn't see you guys on my way to and back from Zealand, I kind of knew ya might go to the kanc. :D

Great seeing the gang and it was good to be back on the trail in NH after an injury. Couple more hikes, and I hope to back to normal form. :D

Thanks mike and gin again for the warm digs after. :D

....that was the second time those winter Bonds got the best of me...third time lucky eh?
You made it down OK, they didn't get the best of you. :)

Mats, you and Jeff are animals. Not cute, furry little rabbits or distant, calculating lizards, but ferocious badgers of great intensity and mindless devotion.

I don't know -- Mats seems pretty cuddly to me.

Good job, Mats and Stony. That's intense.

Hey Mats, it was so good to see you and hike with you again, has been too long. Congratulations on your finish, that's quite a feat. Well done and welcome back!! It was always a great pleasure to hike with this great group of people, what a fun hike. Thanks!!

Pictures.

Sounds very similiar to the Flipped Like Pancakes Tour of '05..............
either of you have your googles and / or hats stolen from you by the fierce wind while crossing the col????
Great "training day" for your next thin air expedition Mats!
Glad you & Jeff were able to cross unscathed!
Garret B had a very similiar winter 48 finish on the Bonds. You guys are in a class by yourselves!

Awesome Mats !! That's a fine way to get back to the trails.. all out!

Wish I could have been there, even in the brutal cold :)

We will celebrate soon.

GG... now I get another chance to be at your finish... see? it really is all about me!
:)

OK, might as well let it out since there are little talks about it in the thread and there won't be a guessing game why I've been out of commission for much of the last half year. In July of last year i was diagnosed with stage three melanoma. The cancer had spread to a lymphnode about 8 inches from the original melanoma on my middle left back. It was a mole which kept growing. If something looks strange on your body.....check with the doctor. The sooner the better.

Anyway, had a biopsy and a couple of surgeries to remove an additional area around the original tumor. This was in August. In October they removed an additional 20 lymphnodes from under my left arm and got the good news they were all clear. Initially with the biopsy they removed 4 lymphnodes and discovered one of them had cancer cells in it. That's the reason they removed 20 more as a margin of safety. They say it's still a 30% chance the cancer has moved to other areas but it's a 70% chance it hasn't :)

Check wikipedia for more information on melanoma and interferon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanoma
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interferon

Then in November I started a 7-week interferon treatment which ended on January 7th. It was originally a 4-week treatment but since the liver function started to get compromised and the white blood cell level went too low they had to stop the treatment for a while. I was sick from that when Stoney came to visit. No steroids in the interferon......avoiding sugar and processed food as much as possible now. Have a wicked juicer where sprouts and wheatgrass etc is crushed to juice. A bit of lifestyle change is needed. Stay away from sugar - especially high fructose corn syrup and other more refined forms of it. Sugar directly feeds the cancer. Excercise makes the sugar go to the muscles instead of the cancer cells is a theory which makes sense. Enough of preaching. Cath Goodwin gave me a great book about juicing and the easiest two-stage juicer to clean is the Omega Juicer model 8003 or 8005. My goal of kegging the 48 has diminished somewhat and I've been thinking of "Extreme Juicing on the 48" as an alternative.

Currently doing genetic testing of gene P16 since my brother who is 42 just got diagnosed with far advanced (stage 4) pancreatic cancer which spread to the liver which is heavily infested with tumors. There is a documented abnormality in the P16 gene which makes it much more likely that you get melanoma and pancreatic cancer. Will get results on February 5th if this is the case with me and my brother from the DNA analysis. My brother is getting treatment at the Gerson Institute in Mexico currently. They can do more stuff there. With radiation and chemo here in the US he was given 6 months to live. 4 without chemo and radiation. He seems to do better now and he is confident he will get out of this successfully. His name is Hans for anyone who prays or sending good vibes.

Sleep, stress-relief, hydration, nutrition and excercise are corner stones to a healthy life which makes you able to do experience more beautiful things in the mountains.

And to answer Cath and Mtnmama: we held on to our goggles and gloves etc....and what's next? Maine next weekend and then enjoy the winter in New Hampshire......and you never know.....maybe a winter record attempt in March;)

Hugging, Hiking and Smiling is good for you.......:D

Have you ever seen Adventurous smile? Oh boy what a treat;)

See you all on the trail!

Mats

Wow, Mats - you and your brother are on a journey. God speed and best wishes for a speedy recovery to you both.

Am very glad to hear you're back on the trails!

The game of relentless forward progression is about more than just moving your feet. I'd give you the stay strong statement but I know you have no choice because it is who you are..I'm sure your brother is the same..Oaks tend to grow in groves.

Wow, way to go, Mats & Jeff! Sounds like with just a bit thinner air you could have been on some of the really high peaks. But . . . I think you had plenty of challenge right there on the Bonds this time. Excellent job getting across in those conditions--must have something to do with the attitude.

Also congrats on your W48, Mats. Now the 67? ;)

Congratulations Mats! Quite a rebound, from out of action to back with full steam.

Heck of a day to make a comeback, glad you and Jeff got 'er done.

Sounds very similiar to the Flipped Like Pancakes Tour of '05..............

Hey Cath, I was telling Mardi the story of you, Kevin, and crew as we waited to hear Mats and Jeff were back. That still ranks in my mind as the worst wind experience of anyone I know on that traverse... That spot can pickup wind no doubt. Thankfully for Mats and Jeff they outweigh you by a pound or two ;)
