This “Trip Report” is taken from the 1886 edition of Appalachia as digitized by Google from the library of Harvard University and uploaded to the Internet Archive.)

It isn’t “new-news” that folks in the 1800’s were doing some of the same hikes we do today. But, I still found this Trip Report from nearly 125 years ago to be pretty amazing stuff, and as entertaining as some of the Trip Reports that we post here in the 21st century!

I thought some of you might enjoy it as well.

Hi Happy Hiker
Thanx for posting this 'trip report', this is great!
I printed it out so I can read it on the way to the Whites tonite

I am addicted to & fascintaed by the rich history of the White Mts
It's all around us on every trail I love it

Have you ever read "Our Mountain Trips" (I & II)
by Walter & Ida James?
They actually took many hiking trips in the White Mts fom 1899 - 1926
& documented them with entertaining 'Trip Reports' in a journal fashion
with so many details & pictures to accompany them!
Even a log of hotel food & train expenses for each trip.
Their grandchildren found these journals & compiled them into 2 books.
Steve Smith gave them some input to some of the pics too!

It's all the same trails we take today. It is so cool to see the pics of the way things looked then
& to go to these spots & compare how they look today
If you're into history of the Whites I think you'll love these books,
(Mt Wanderer)
they really take you back in time

Thanx again I'll definately enjoy reading this one!

Thanks Tricia for your reply and for the book recommendation . . . much appreciated!

Although I’ve not YET read “Our Mountain Trips” from cover to cover, I’ve read (and enjoyed) several selections.

And you’re soooo right about the rich history of the Whites! It’s a truly remarkable place. It’s little wonder that for many generations, folks have continued to fall deeply in love with “The Great White Hills of New Hampshire” (yet another good read by Ernest Poole).
