We plan on bagging North Twin (25) next week on the way to the Highland Center. The next two days we plan on Waumback (26), travelling from the Highland Center and then travelling to Joe Dodge Lodge after bagging Waumback. Does anyone have any clue as to the travelling distance/time/best route between Highland and Starr King Trail and from the trailhead to Joe Dodge Lodge. The next morning we plan to hit Moriah (27). Again, anyone with the travel info to Carter Moriah Trail. From there we must come home to Massachusetts...hate that ride!

Thank you as always...in advance. :)

From I-93 the route I believe is rt 3/302/115 to rt 2, then make a left at the rt2/115 intersection. It s not an obvious trailhead but easy enough to find. Travel time if it is early from the Highland Center w/o slow moving cars is probably 30 minute droive from the HC. Carter-Moriah Trail from the HC is the same route, only make a right to to Gorham at rt2/115 intersection. You go thru the town over the bridge, and the trailhead is actually actross the street from a housing area, 45 minutes to an hour from the HC with some traffic.

By the way, unless you absolutely need Waumbek, save it for a viewless or rainy day. If the weather is fine do another peak up there. if you haven't done them already, Carter Dome, the N. Presi's, etc are better for good view-good weather days. Keep Waumbek as a bad weather backup for your trip.

Good luck!! :)

Waumbek may not have any views, but Mt Star King does have nice views. Best with some snow underfoot to give you a higher viewpoint.

Thats A good point...but with wife, looking for easiets trails

I know you're asking about directions and I don't have anything to add that amstony didn't cover.

I would suggest that if you are planning on hitting North Twin, that you continue on to South Twin. The North Twin Spur trail between the two is relatively easy at 2.6 miles RT and 300 feet of vertical gain. It's much easier to bag South Twin this way than grinding up the Twinway from the Galehead hut. On the trip to North and South Twin via the North Twin Trail and North Twin Spur, the trip up North Twin is the hardest part. If your wife is looking for easy, she might be disappointed.

Have fun,
Glenn
