What are some of the weather web sites that are used for trip planning in the Whites other than Mt.Washington.org site.?

www.wunderground.com (which appears to be based on NOAA info)

weather.com (weather channel) in my experiences has let me down way more often than the above three.

I like to keep it simple and I use weather.com. I will also check the observatory site at times for the higher summits forcast as well.

I agree with Artex on the NOAA site. Their hourly forecast graph is very useful. The probability of precipitation percentages listed in the text forecast is the pessimistic view from the hourly details. By reviewing the hourly information I believe you get a clearer picture of what to expect. There are quite a few other products accessible from this primary site other than point forecasts that I find helpful.

Another place I look for information is the aviation weather sites, or even local airports. This will give fairly accurate cloud elevation details. Hiking on cloudy days isn’t bad if the clouds are above the summits. If you’re hiking a 5K peak and have a 3.5K ceiling…. You get the point.

the http://www.wunderground.com site also has some cloud information included in their point forecasts.

1Km Radar on Intellicast for "real time" weather

I triangulate between Weather.com and a few other sources, but if I am close to a connection, I rely heavily on the 1Km radar from Intellicast for near-real-time predictions:

During ski season, and especially on questionable-weather days, I have used this to great end, calculating when the back edge of a line of showers will pass. It's a pretty straight-forward time-speed-distance guessitmate and has saved lots of outdoor days that might otherwise have been mis-spent inside.

Yup, all good. Intellicast + NOAA with a little crownweather thrown in is great. There was a thread a while back about winds/temps aloft, but this is a bit more useful for winter hiking. I believe the site was http://adds.aviationweather.gov/winds/

Then again, if you are with me, you get thunderstorms regardless. (how the trail name got started!)

Nice! Have to try it out to see how accurate it is. Though I note that "extremely cold" is +12 F. Meh.

Love NOAA.gov because I can stick a tack on the topo and it will update the forecast for that spot. Very helpful when looking to see where snow/rain transition lines are or how winds will change with elevation.

Been looking at a couple different weather sites throughout the last couple weeks and have noticed weather.com is often not updated to a current forecast. Like today it was the forecast from 9/1 .

Be careful out there ! Double check your info !

Could be your browser, or some other in-band appliance, is caching that web page. You might flush the browser cache or force a refresh (shift-F5 in Firefox, Ctrl-F5 (I THINK) in IE...)

thanks, that seems to have worked. weird though, I think it's been on both my work and home computers and I habitually delete cookies, etc.

The web server is supposed to send content headers which include caching instructions, expiration times, etc. The browser is supposed to use those headers to decide when to refresh things. Then you get content caches in between... it's not 100% reliable
