I just returned from a week in the Whites at the AMC CT Chapter Fall Hiking Week. This year we were based out of the Eagle Mountain House in Jackson.
9/19- After visiting a friend in Concord, I stopped to hike Jackson and Webster on the way up, using the Webster-Jackson Trail from Crawford Notch. It was very windy up there and I was glad to have my hat and gloves! Nice welcome and wake up call for the "week." After getting back to the car I made my way to Jackson to meet up with the group.
9/20- Both old and new friends headed out for the Wildcats. After the car shuttle we started up the Wildcat Ridge Trail and came down 19 Mile Brook. Great views at various spots along the way. Weather was great.
9/21- Moriah was the plan for the day- I thought why not add more so I talked some people into joining me for the Carters. 3 of us took off from the start of the Carter-Moriah trail never to see the rest of the group again. They took a leisurely pace, had a long lunch at Moriah and returned to the cars. After a stop on Moriah for some food and to chat with some southbounders we continued on. We made it to Zeta Pass without a problem and descended via 19 Mile Brook again. Great weather and views once again.
9/22- Pierce and Eisenhower were the goal for today. Some of the group opted for a smaller elevation hike while 3 of us headed to the Highland Center and up the Crawford Path. We made it up and down with no problems. The weather held, although it was overcast all day.
9/23- The forecast called for 40% chance of rain so a lot of folks headed for the Conway strip tour. I took a couple of people with me up to Waumbek, which a couple of us needed and since there are no views anyway, it seemed like a great option for the day. We went up and down the Starr King Trail and stayed dry despite the clouds.
9/24- The majority of the group was reenergerized and ready for Galehead. And a few of us wanted more and added on the Twins. We all went up the Gale River Trail and had lunch at the hut. Views from there are incredible. We all went up and down Galehead and then 3 of us took off for the Twins. It was steep going up South Twin but well worth it. More great views and great weather were had. After a short break it was off to North Twin. More great views were enjoyed before heading down the North Twin Trail. We FOUND a fleece jacket on the way down. Let me know if it's yours. We did all 3 stream crossings and enjoyed the views up and down the river. Got back to the car at the trailhead and headed back for dinner and much deserved beers.
All in all it was a great week in the Whites. Great friends, old and new. The fall foliage got better and better as the week went on. Got 12 peaks for the week and am now at 34/48. Looking forward to the next trip.
