South Carter and Middle Carter peaks via Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter Moriah Trail, North Carter Trail, Imp Trail
Date: 10/12/2009
Participants: CrazyBob, Petch, Keith (KPMMBM) or Vinnie, Horshack, and Epstein (in no specific order)
Trail Conditions: All trails fairly dry, a bit of mud, a dusting of snow and ice up at elevation- ok without traction. All stream crossings do-able. A good size Birch blow down on the Carter Dome trail that has been there for a while- herd path around well established.
Commentary: Well, CrazyBob, myself, were up at Carter Dome for the FOT48 (with JustJoe). But we didn't get to hit the other Carters on the 4K list. So CrazyBob and I, along with Keith (KPMMBM) went back to check 2 more 4k's off our lists. We met at the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail head. It was cool outside but relatively clear and it looked like we were in for a good weather day. We hit the trail just before 8am with CrazyBob and Keith cranking up the trail with me in tow (yeah, as usual, you got that straight). The fall colors were in full swing. Many leaves had already jumped to their death and lay in the trail.
On the way up, we only saw one hiker, a lady, who was moving fast. In what seemed like very little time we were at the Zeta pass bench where I parked my butt to rest my weary bones. We went up the Carter Moriah trail towards South Carter. A neat section of trail with lots of foot bridges. Many of which had a dusting of snow on them. As we gained elevation on the way to South Carter we were rewarded with a couple outlooks.
The views today were outstanding. The Baldfaces could be seen across the Wild River area, Mount Hight and Carter Dome to the South, Carrigain and other peaks along the Kanc, and not be left out- Mount Washington and the Northern Presi's to the West. From the Middle Carter viewpoints, it seemed like you could reach out and touch the Northern Presi's. Winter is in the air. We had temps in the high 20's up on the range. "Global climate change is real" - yeah, right....The heck with Al Gore. I don't care if he invented the internet or not. I think I read that on Wikipedia. If it's on the internet is must be true, right? I digress, yet once again.....Of all the things I've lost, it's my mind I miss the most.
We met another hiker, Glen, up on the ridge near Middle Carter, then we headed down the North Carter Trail. Shortly down the trail, we took a lunch break out of the wind. The lady hiker who had passed us early morning, passed us by again after summiting Mount Hight and Carter Dome along with the peaks we had done. The humanity. It made me feel like a human slug, or perhaps a 3 toed sloth.....
Anyway, I pulled out my GPS and pulled up the waypoint for a location on the Imp trail that would be a 1/2 mile bushwack over to the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. We were trying to avoid a road walk. I also had the coords for another point that would bring us down to Camp Dodge. So off we went down passed the Imp Trail junction and down the Imp Trail.
We met a few folks with their dog enjoying the trail. As we got down to the turn in the trail near Cowboy brook we looked for a herd path that would lead us to the Nineteen Brook Trail. But, we saw none. So we decided to avoid this wack and head down towards the Camp Dodge area. We didn't need the GPS to find the side path here, as there was already a trail. We went down to Camp Dodge and walked the <1/2 mile walk back to the NMB trailhead. Another great view hike. Good to meet ya Keith.
Hiking Stats: around 11 miles or so, 6 hrs 15min
