A beautiful day! Light breezes and hot, but not too hot. We did trail work yesterday, (I'll let Laurie post about that), and so today we 'relaxed' with a nice hike up a great mountain. We met Fran and Steve at the end of Spruceton Road, and started around 9:00. The first mile went quickly as we thought about how wonderful the stream would be later in the day. We made the U-turn at the falls, and started the climb.

At first, the trail was very wide, having been cleared very recently of nettles. Thanks to whoever did this! The farther up we went, the tighter the trail becomes. We encountered quite a few large blowdowns, many of which have small trails around them. Aside from that, the trail is in good shape, but it has been very dry lately. The spring is running just enough if you need water.

We hit the view points and dropped our packs for the short walk to the true summit, where we took some pics. Back down at the ledge, we admired the views for quite a while. Steve and Fran are getting very good at pointing out Catskills peaks!

Eventually, down we went, meeting 11 people in small groups. I started getting excited when we could hear the water! We all jumped in to varying degrees at the falls. It was cold! :D Speaking of cold, a few cold ones were passed around at the cars. :D

A great hike with great friends!

Ever since first passing the Diamond Notch Falls on the descent from West Hunter back in May, I've had it in my mind that I wanted to come back in the summer to hike West Kill and take advantage of the pool of cool water at the base of the falls on the way back to the car. We were so glad that Tom and Laurie wanted to join us on this hike. Great hike, terrific views, and wonderful company. Thanks to the trail angel(s) who cleared away the nettles! And Tom wasn't kidding...that water was COLD!!
