What constitutes an "unsupported hike"?

So this just gets better and better. For my friend, hiking "unsupported" on a 40 miler means he and his partner cannot hike with someone who would not carry food nor water for them, but it does mean stopping at Lakes for dinner and the Observatory to top up on water!

To each their own, I suppose, but if someone else is going to feed you, I can't see how that is "unsupported."

We have seen many definitions in this thread, but buying food along the way doesn't seem to fall into any of them.

Y1K definition

The Yukon 1000 mile canoe race is "unsupported" as required by the rules. Meaning after the start there is no help allowed from pit crews or anyone else biased, as opposed to what is done (and is necessary) during the other Yukon race, the 460 mile Yukon River Quest. Y1K teams may only seek the same help and comfort that is generally available to all... such as stopping at villages along the river for the same supplies available to all if needed during the week-long race. Most wouldn't spare such a frivolous expenditure of time, everything needed goes in the boat from the start.
