I agree with Brian W
Kids pirceless.
I have only day hiked except for one overnighter with my 4 year old son.
Day hikes 10-20 Lbs. not counting carrying my son 34lbs., my 7 year old daughter strong enough to hike under her own power priceless.
The one overnighter with my son we were attemting to go to Tabletop from Denning.
Cariryng a 54 lb. pack (carried everything except his little pack with his own flashlight and compass in it)
crossing the Neversink on that log bridge was not fun.
Less fun was carrying a 34lb kid who can't swim and moves too much.
Good news is no one fell in but I did make seperate trips with pack and kid.
We had a great time, after spending a 1/2 hour trying to find a better spot to cross
my son killing time drew out a map to let me know we were on the wrong side of the stream and had to cross,
he didn't understand why I was laughing the rest of the day.
They are the best thing to clarify a situation. They think in simple terms.
