Just noticed a really interesting (new?) feature on the Mt Wash Web site:

It is a real-time Vertical Temperature Profile of the mountain, based on sensors located along the Auto Road.

The comments from today's observer also seem to indicate that the sensor network is being expanded to Lakes Hut and other locales.

This will be really interesting to view during the winter when planning trips in the Whites.

Note the 85 deg reading at the foot of the mountain!!!

So cool...

That temp profile is awesome! The shed temp at the bottom is frequently out of touch with reality (maybe it's sun-exposed?) but the temps on the way up illustrate that it's not always colder as you go up. Very useful. Typically the rule of -3.5 F for every 1000 ft is only true in a moving, stable airmass.

Let's say your on another mountains summit at lets say around 3000 feet. Would the temp posted at 3000 feet on Washington be the temp on the other mountains peak as well or....

Assuming you are on a peak near by Washington, sure, it would be close. It would depend on the sun, cloud, and wind conditions being similar. Probably not a bad starting point though. I was planning on using it for just such information.
