I saw this trail sign today at the junction of the Lincoln Woods/Wilderness Trail and the Osseo Trail. It was pouring rain and I was gunning for the parking lot but I stopped and stared at it for awhile anyway and ended up taking its picture. I think it is a white sign painted out black in all but the upper right corner, but it could be a black sign painted white in the upper right corner. It reads (top to bottom): Flume Slide Trail 4.0; Franconia Ridge Trail 4.0; Mt. Flume 4.1; Liberty Springs Trail 5.5. This sign is not in a wilderness area. Is it a rohrscharch test?

I have noticed this peculiar sign many a time while on the Wilderness Trail. It also doesn't help that it's on the opposite side of the trail at the Osseo junction. No clue as to why it's painted black. I noticed the only part not painted black says "AMC".

I'd say it's a white sign with green lettering. The black is painted over the bolts and I can see streaks running down the lower right side.....looks like a weird case of vandalism to me...... :( Wonder if it has anything to do with the AMC?

I'm pretty sure this is the same guy that often defaced the Garfield sign and others. I thought his beef had something to do with water rights, but I've completely blanked it out as his method of protest is so juvenile.

I heard a rumor that they caught the AMC sign vandal, but I do not know any details.....guess we can wait and see if there are any more sign attacks over the next few months, assuming that the vandal is now incarcerated and there are not copycats......

Yes, when going up Wilderness a couple weeks ago to ascend Flume and Liberty, we damn near hiked right past this sign when we wanted to take that left on Osseo. My dad-in-law actually was going right by it and luckily I stopped and got a closer look to it and called him over. Since the Wilderness is so easy, that 1.4 mile to get to that point goes by quicker than most 1.4's, so that sign does come up quicker than expected and it seems like that isn't the Osseo unless you already know it or you look closely. And yeah, definitely didn't help being on the right side of the trail when we knew to expect a left hand turn.

I agree that this looks like the work of the person who was vandalizing AMC signs a year or so ago. A ranger recently told me they caught the guy but I have no further details.

Sweet. I hope the legal system doesn't show him much mercy. Black signs aren't very condusive to night hiking. I can only imagine the excuse this guy would come up with to justify his behavior if someone took a wrong turn and got hurt because of his actions. There are far better ways to protest something you don't agree with.
