whatsit: rescue sled?

saw this hiking above Tuckerman Ravine. Is it a sled for rescues?



if so, how do you get to it when it's buried in snow?

Hard to tell, but it looks like a litter (basket-shaped metal stetcher) on the bottom and a toboggan on the top, order of which would be reversed in actual use. Dig it out?

Looks like it is going to "be" something rather than "is" something. A monitoring device that needs to be errected?

I agree with Waumbek--it looks like the end of a Stokes litter and the front of a toboggan.

It is probably placed at a location where snow tends to blow away rather than drift.

I agree. It looks like both a tobaggon and Stokes basket. It will also state the obvious and say that it also looks like there use to be a door that was locked on that end of that culvert pipe. It clearly shows the three hinges on top and what appears to be a hook to put a lock through on the bottom.

Actually it's a Marmot trap. You'll know it's operating properly when you hear the following sequence:

1. "Hey, look over there."
2. "Let's see if we can get it out and ride it down the Sherbie."
3. Riiiiiippp.
4. "%^&*! I just bought this jacket!"
