And there weren't ever a whole bunch on Osgood Ridge. Nope. Never saw any. Weren't there.
:D

Gotta appreciate those clearings where such delights can flourish. Makes me berry berry happy to come across a patch, a pleasure disproportionate to the size, taste and effort. And don't forget mountain cranberries often found on the same ridges as those tiny low growing blueberries ... guys, they're known to promote healthy prostates.

Look around, too, for bears love to gorge themselves on these things, ... between the beer and the berries we really do share a kinship with these bruins. Most likely the best you'll ever see are berry stained stools and matted grass where they enjoyed a sun basked summer nap. If you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the hind side of a retreating bear, disappointed at the fact that someone else has discovered her patch.

Ate our way up Avery and across Little Bigelow last Sunday.

Now if you all were nice, you've left us some on Mahoosuc Arm and points south for this weekend. :p

Move over blueberries, A tale of blackberries and black bears

Blueberry pickings are getting slim in the Catskills, As of today (9/3) there were still some on Ashokan High Point, and they should last for about another week. The best pickings are the huckleberries in the open meadow east of the main summit. It is short bushwhack down from the summit, and most hikers don't know its there so it hasn't grazed over as much.

The better Catskill choice is now the blackberries. I nearly gorged myself on Bearpen Mt (9/1), and those berries should last through most of September.

I agree with Stan that we and bears have a lot in common. As I was hiking on the old road on the Bearpen ridge I had a chance encounter with a black bear. I spied him before he saw me so I got a good look. He was gingerly walking around the large mud wallows in the road trying to keep his feet dry just as I was doing. This was very near the Delaware County High Point and the silly thought entered my mind, "I wonder if he is a county high pointer?" No doubt he had been at the highpoint as it has an ample supply of blackberries. There was also evidence that he or his brethren had visited a number of the viewpoints - though being near sighted they probably enjoy basking in the sun more than the views. I am sure that we share a disdain for the noisy hot-rodding ATVs that created the many mud wallows that we were both trying to avoid. After he spied me we stared at each other for about a minute over the wallows and from a distance of about 40 feet. Then he was off in search of more berries and so was I.
