Whiteface (& a failed Passaconaway) via Blueberry Ledge/Rollins/Dicey's Mill - 3/3/13
Date of Hike: 3/3/13
Trail Conditions: Packed Snow, Deep Powder, mass of downed trees on Rollins Tr
Special Equipment: Bareboot/microspikes on lower trails, snowshoes essential on higher portion of BL, all of Rollins Tr & upper Dicey's Mill Tr.
Comments: Started in bareboots on Blueberry ledge Trail as snow was concrete-hard. It turned mushier and we started to sink in after ~2.5 miles. A few folks ahead of us forgot their snowshoes and postholed along. We switched to snowshoes and easily walked through what is usually a scramble of ledges near the top, and enjoyed the fog at the south summit where we met a few friends. We continued on the Rollins Tr to find no tracks to Whiteface's true summit. We slogged through 6 or 8 inches of heavy powder all the way to the junction with Dicey's Mill Tr. Pooped and wanting to get to the cars before dark, I, and we - opted to visit to Passaconanway's summit another day. Hopefully someone else will benefit from our tracks for the full Whiteface/Passaconaway loop soon! NOTE: There was some route finding to do at huge set of blowdowns past the summit of Whiteface at the beginning of the downhill stretch. Follow to the right of the blowdowns going down downhill for about 3/4 way down, and then cross over the trees to find the trail on the other side.. (Don't go straight over the blowdowns, you won't find the trail over that way, as you may see by our first footsteps
