Wed 7/22: We took the day off yesterday due to a little fatigue and alot of rain. The rest did us good as we went for Whiteface and Pass today. The low early clouds never really broke for us until after we were descending (of course). We went up Blueberry Ledge Trail because of the wet conditions and we were glad we did. No views from the ledges however. :( We ran into a trail crew at about 2800' installing a long 'S' shaped rock stair. The six guys were very friendly and told us they had already been working for two weeks and have another week to go. They are paid contractors working for the Woncelacet Outdoor Club (WOC). We thanked them for their fine work.
Rollins Trail was in decent shape considering its location and it was sort of eerie at times with dark, misty clouds and the closeness of the trail. In short order we were ready to go up to Pass and another easy ascent. The lookout before the summit showed a view of everything below about 3700'. The actual summit could compete with Nye Mtn. in the ADKs as the worst view from a summit (totally treed-in). We hiked down from the summit via Dicey's Mill in less than two hours and the total hike time was just under seven hours.
Our gratitude to the WOC for their fine trail maintenance. This was really a pleasant hiking experience even without the view. I believe a donation from us to their trail maintenance program is in order.
Two to go. Bro-in-law and nephew need Jeff, Adams and Madison to catch up with us so tomorrow we go for those and stay at the Madison Hut. The remaining plan, weather dependent, is descend via Valley Way Fri morning, get Carrigain Friday afternoon and Owl's Head Saturday to complete the 48. The fingers are crossed!

Contingency Planning

Thanks Trish and Alex, looks like you're close too.

Due to current forecast, alternate plan is Owl's Head Saturday, Carrigain Sunday, skip work to drive home on Monday, explain to boss on Tuesday why I was absent. He has no clue what the NH48 even means and I really don't care.

Hey now! There is a second (in my opinion better) viewpoint just around the corner from the summit on the Walden Trail. Did I pass you guys near the bottom of Dicey's Mill yesterday?

Rocket21, that was us, the two boys in front, me next and the pooped out brother-in-law sweeping it up. I was in cruise mode but you were definitely in overdrive.

Nice to meet you guys (albeit ever so briefly!)

By the way, here's what the second near-summit vista looked like Wednesday evening, so hopefully this peak will fall off your worst-views list :) :

No, I meant the actual summit - in the trees!

Surely there are some other 4Ks in NH that would tie it, then, such as nearby Whiteface :)

In late winter, though, both offer slight views (in the case of Passaconaway, of the Lakes Region).

The 'Burgh

Hey Tom, interesting diversion from Passaconaway's summit to Pittsburgh, but I checked out your 4th of July link and must say that the 'Bier' at the Hofbrauhaus is mighty tasty. We are proud of our city, its renaissance from being a steel town to a center of excellence in medicine and the sciences and of course our champion teams. I am originally from Niskayuna, NY but have been in Pittsburgh since 1984 so its home to me now. I just wish we were closer to some real mountains.
