I'm trying to firm up/adjust weekend plans and have been checking the usual sources, North Conway Weather Channel and Mount Washington Observatory home page forecasts.
Is the Observatories High Peaks forecast the best source for this type of prognosticating ?

I usually go for the MWO high peaks forecast at

http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/mountains.html

They sensibly only forecast 24 hours, which avoids that feeling of false confidence typically associated with "extended" forecasts. It's hard enough to forecast 10 hours in the Whites, much less 10 days.

That said, if you want a longer outlook they do offer one on the "sports" forecast. And it calls for rain on Saturday. Maybe I'll be finishing my 48 some other weekend. Bummer.

Looking bleak, question will be whether front that might rain on or before Red Sox today (hopefully cleansing the 14-2 drubbing out of their system) goes through or lingers around here. Initial long range forecast has it lingering.

If barely through with precip & lower temps you may not see rain up high but sleet, too hard toc all this early.

Of course since I am hiking Saturday in the Whites, it will rain. :( What I have not figured out yet is where I'll hike F-Ridge if sleet & high wind unlikely or another viewless day on Whiteface & Pasaconaway.

Does it rain because Mother Nature has spyware on my PC & knows when I'm NH bound or do I plan hikes on rainy weekends?????

Columbus Day Rain

Of all the Columbus-Day-Weekends I've spent up there, I remember more rainy ones than clear ones.

What helps me in this is the knowledge that if I then choose not to go, I'll feel like a tool staying home, especially when the weather turns out to be okay.

Perhaps we just decide to revise the trip plans to somewhere other than the high ridges during the affected time period.

See y'all there...,
