When I'm hiking, I wait until I have a visual on the approaching party.
Then I yell, Move! or get the hell out of the way, or thru-hiker comming thru!
Just kidding.
I think it's a courtesy thing.
I alway's yeild.
I'f I'm going up it gives me a chance take a breather so I don't look so sheepish huff'in and puff'in past a group.
Down hill I alway's yeild too.Unless the person or group is clearly off the trail waiting for me.
When approaching a large group, say 4 or more, I alway's insist they go first.
Unless, my party is bigger. Which usually does not exceed 3.
